Two Zap Problems with 1.0.2 that appeared at the same time: choppyness and squealing

a Adit Channelbank with 8 POTS lines hooked up to the Channelbank.
I've watched the vritual memory and CPU status on the * box during the
call and the system is totally idle. Looking at the verbose logging
in *, there isn't any obvious activity on the console that corresponds
with the choppyness. It sounds like this is the echo canceller having
problems, but regular phones plugged into the lines sound fine. In
early November, this system was running fine on 1.0, but even
downgrading back to 1.0 now doesn't fix the problem. Any thoughts?
The other problem is related to our legacy PB...

C7960 g729 question
...ple voiceage g729 licenses installed on a RH9 box, and have
a remote C7960 configured to use it (low bandwidth). In calls like:
Remote C7960 -> g729 -> asterisk -> g711 -> C7960
the audio is oftentimes rather choppy. Changing the remote 7960 to use
g711 seems to eliminate/reduce the choppyness. Any ideas on what might
be behind this?

Steam Games Don't Work. Please Help!
I bought a new computer for myself, and installed Kubuntu on it. I installed Steam on it, bought the orange box, tried to run TF2, and it didn't work. When I started it up, t showed the VALVE logo and played their little jingle, showed the Source logo, then the screen went blank and nothing happened :x . Currently I am not running stable versoin, rather a farely old cvs
version (these are production units so hard to upgrade without a lot
of effort), I do plan to upgrade to stable version as soon as
possible, however would like some advice as to the best way to improve
things and eliminate the choppyness and the warnings.

OK, background/config.
running * (show version reports 0.9.0) on Mandrake 9.2 (kernel:
2.4.22-32mdk) with a dual 800mhz PIII with 256M Ram 4port FXO digium card,
no IRQ sharing I can find (cat /proc/pci & cat /proc/interrupts), vmstat
reports a minimum of 80+% CPU idle when problem occurs.
connect to a Grandstream 101 (GS) via vpn (no nat). Link has 100ms - 150ms
ROUND TRIP latency
