DDoS attacks, what can be done?
Hi, I run two live c-class subnets on the internet. Last Sunday morning I was hit with a DDoS attack and it hasn''t stopped. I made modifications on my shorewall firewall during Sunday to lesson the impact, as they were hammering me with 180k/5sec traffic both ways (inbound and outbound). One of the primary things which helped reduce their DDoS was enabling "norfc1918" on the

User Administrator (and only it) access denied on member server
Hello all, I have really strange problem with Samba 4.1.0 - regarding only one user - Administrator. There are 2 servers: NAS (which is DC) and CHEETAH (Which is domain member). Have spent long time in efforts to sync UID/GID across servers (these are used both from Linux over NFS and from Windows) - and finally wrote the scripts to make all users/groups (even including the builtin one, like "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM) consistent on all my Linux s...

CentOS 6 and an SAS drive, hardware
This is... odd. Got a 6.8 box, a Dell R320 lspci tells me 01:00.0 RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 2008 [Falcon] (rev 03) so it *should* accept an SAS drive. I've got a Cheetah that's a few years old, and having pulled it out of another server (in the datecenter), I put it in this box to zero it out for reuse... and the box refuses to see the drive. *Nothing* in dmesg, *nothing* in /var/log/messages, and I tried echo "0" etc to get the SCSI buses to rescan....

building cobbler on centos
Is it difficult to build cobbler on Centos or should I just go with Fedora on this one? Basically, if you have experience succeeeding at this, can you drop me a link to a Howto or describe the issues? I am only writing this because I tried, and ran into quite a few dependency issues with upstream/downstream packages, and would rather concentrate on just getting a nice working Cobbler (and

Problems with usbhid-ups and CyberPower CP1500 on 2.6.0
I've been running the Debian packaged 2.4.3 for a while, working find. When 2.6.0-1 just pushed through to debian, things have stopped working :( I checked what had been the usual suspects in past problems, namely permissions problems in /dev/bus/usb, but all seems in order: $ lsusb ... Samba Server Specifications
Has anyone posted an up to date hardware review lately? It seems clear that a RAID6 server with 300GB CHEETAH 15K.5 SAS drives will trump a P3 with a 30GB IDE drive, however, not everyone will spend the money required for the high end unit, I'm looking to build a new server & trying to make best use of funds (aren't we all). TIA

Howto add another disk storage
Hi all What is the best strategy to add another storage to an existing virtual mail system ? Move some domains to the new storage and create symlinks ? Switch to dovecot hashing ? But in this case what is the easy-east way to migrate ? Thanks for any suggestions or tips !

EXT2 vs. EXT3: mount w/sync or fdatasync
My application always needs to sync file data after writing. I don't want anything handing around in the kernel buffers. I am wondering what is the best method to accomplish this. 1. Do I use EXT2 and use fdatasync() or fsync()? 2. Do I use EXT2 and mount with the "sync" option? 3. Do I use EXT2 and use the O_DIRECT flag on open()? 4. Do I use EXT3 in full journaled mode,

onboard adaptec SAS RAID controller not seeing drive(s)
I have a Supermicro SuperServer 6025B-3V with their X7DB3 mobo. It has an onboard Adaptec SAS RAID controller and has been configured as a RAID1 with two Seagate Cheetah 15k.4 disks. Original attempts at installing CentOS4.4 x86_64 appeared to load the aic94xx driver, but then reported something like "No hard drives found...". I grabbed the x86_64 aacraid driver disk from Adaptec (updated 23 OCT 2006) and tried a "linux dd" install. Althoug...
