smb/cifs or nfsv3: which is "cheaper"
...ld backup
copies of about 200 DVDs. These DVDs will be played through a gigabit
LAN to another Fedora Core 4 (or 5) workstation using xine which will
then output video to the projector in my living room.
I am not asking to start a competition or war on the list.
My question is, which is "cheaper" both in terms of processing power and
network overhead: nfsv3 or smbfs or cifs? I'll also take information on
nfsv4, though that is not my current setup.
I use Samba for tons of Linux <--> Windows things, but since this is a

The desire for prettier and cheaper images ...
This might be easy (but I didn't find an answer in the archives).
I'm trying to make nice looking images (using image()).
To make them look nice (not jagged), it usually takes me at least 100x100 points. This can be slow for frequent redraws.
Is there a smarter (less point intensive) way?
I was thinking in terms of hexabins, for example, which for much less jagged looking regions,

Thanks!

200+ analog phones connected to FXS modules
...sk servers (cluster) mainly due
to PCI slot availability.
I am aware of the TDM2400P card. One could put 6 FXS
uqad-modules and would serve 24 analog phones.
However, I would need at least 9 of these PCI cards
which could be placed in 2 or 3 servers.
Is there another way of doing this (hopefully cheaper
and more convenient)?
Thank you for your suggestions.

Good comparisons on cheaper VOIP phones
Hello list,
I am doing some work for a non profit group.
As part of this, I am going to be putting in a 30 handset Asterisk solution.
We are trying to keep the costs down as much as possible, as this job
includes cabling, I am looking at POE solutions.
On the switch side, I am considering something like some Netgear ProSafe
FS726TP 24 port switches, or maybe the equivalent Linksys SRW224MP 24

hi, Olly, I have moved the libmagic check after the filesize check directly,

[LLVMdev] Integer factorizations in clang
...atorizing b to get only one multiplication (-O3) which is
normally good for most architectures. But in my case, that pattern takes
just one instruction and I would like to recover it as is.
Where can I find this particular optimization in clang ?
Is there a way of setting multiplications as being cheaper than
additions/subtracions in clang ?
Thanks in advance,

Can't load Centos 5 on laptop
I can load Centos 4.4 fine, but 5 won't even begin to load, it can't even
read the kernel from the CD. I got another cheaper laptop, and that one
loads fine with Centos 5, the same DVD I try in the Pro-star laptop. What
would cause that? I've never seen it before. I'm trying to load DVD x86
32bit DVD. Thanks.

bring their laptops and hook up to the 1024x768 projector. I want to broadcast
that over the net. (I may point a web cam at the presenter too and have that as
a 2nd feed.) I do not want to load anything on their laptop. I 'know' it is
easy, cheaper, and better in some ways, and it may even happen in some
instances, but for the most part, I never want to even ask a speaker to do it.
There just isn't enough time to to make sure it works, etc. A hardware based
solution is much more ... good.

Is R portable?
...s an interesting web site:
http://portableapps.com/. The idea is simple, this is software that
is possible to install and run on some type of USB memory, a stick or
one of these hard disks. I can think of a number of situations where
this could be handy. In addition memory sticks are getting cheaper
and more powerful by the day.
So: Is it possible to run R off one of these sticks?
I am also informed that it is possible to run Latex in this manner.

conference and wifi phones
...has a cradle.
Polycom seems to make pretty nice conf phones but the price is a bit crazy for us. I saw the recommendation with ATA plus an analog Polycom phone but I do prefer a SIP phone. All because it's just too difficult to pull a phone cable into the current conference room. Is there any cheaper SIP solutions out there?
For wifi phone, I tried Linksys iPhone. It works well but lacks a cradle. My users often forget to charge it when they leave for the day and come back to a dead wifi phone for the next morning.
Any good recommendations?

H.264 *Not Patented*
....729 in CPU demand (MIPS:Kbps) and
audio quality at low bitrates? GSM is $free, but G.729 is higher quality
(tho patented with at least $10 per running codec instance royalties).
Will H.264 become the favorite high-quality Asterisk codec, or will it
perhaps force G.729 to become free, or negligibly cheaper?

Windows licensing for Xen
...''s not germane to Xen
itself, but I''m hoping that someone else''s knowledge can save me a
little bit of time. :-)
In order to run Windows (XP, 2003, etc.) as a hardware-virtualized guest
of Xen, is it necessary to purchase a retail-boxed edition of Windows,
or is there a cheaper option? Can I purchase an OEM edition with, for
instance, a hard drive or motherboard that I don''t plan to use with Xen?
The cheapest I''ve been able to find retail Windows XP Home and
Professional is at Provantage ($183 and $274, respectively).
Thanks.

with Dovecot merging them before display as just "Folder" within the
mail client.
This could be further extended so that Dovecot could be configured to
store 'old' message folders in a separate location. We could then have
slower+cheaper+larger storage mounted so that 'old mail' does not take
up the expensive local SCSI disks on the machine. Mail from 2 years ago
is much less likely to be accessed than mail from the last week.
This would provide very neat behind-the-scenes archiving functionality.

10Gbit ethernet
...t be given
new switches uplinked via 10Gbit to the core switch.
Before I spend a great deal of money, can I ask if anyone here has experience
of 10GBit? Dell, HP, Supermicro, IBM (etc..) seem to be pushing the NetXen
PCIe cards, so I guess these drivers work...? As to media, although CX4 seems
cheaper than optical, I hear the cabling is nasty. And is the magical fairy
going to fix 10Gbit over cat6A anytime soon?
any thoughts appreciated.
