Proposal - Extended Channel Layouts in Opus
...run by this list for feedback.

You might like to take a look at the OggPCM
spec. This was never implemented, and has
not been worked since 2009. Visit:
https://wiki.xiph.org/OggPCM
and its companion document:

An alternative approach is to only define
popular layouts. For more obscure layouts,
such as 2.1 and Mid/Side, assume that the
person doing the encoding knew what they
put in, and so knows what will come out.

This seems like a nice, rich set of channels, but I'm not sure if a draft spec (intended for RFC) citing another draft spec is wise. Maybe a case for copying a basic set into this, and defining a new IANA registry?

When you've made a new page, please link it from:

Also, there has been some recent work on channel mappings for OggPCM
(uncompressed PCM data in an Ogg container), which may be related:

Define channel order for 7 and 8 channels
...FLAC. I don't see
a mapping for *any* number of channels.
At the moment, the channel order/mapping on
output are the same as on input. This means
that you can use any mapping you feel is
appropriate. To see a list of mappings which
have been specified elsewhere, visit:
http://wiki.xiph.org/Channel_mapping_examples
Scroll down to near the bottom for 7.1 and 8.0
mappings.

Martin
