blocking file locks
...ogled literature. I need to lock large numbers of
files on the server, and have Samba open requests block until they are
released. I found references to "blocking locks" in references such as
"Using Samba" (O'Reilly, 1999, 2003)
http://oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch05_05.html
but these refer to range locks, which are overkill for my application (I
only need to check on open, not on every IO).
Deny modes would seem to fill the bill, but I can't find whether blocking
locks would work for them, and also they do not seem to be Linux-compatible
on the server, and...

Samba and oplocks
...owing entry under the
global section in the smb.conf
veto oplock files = /*.mdb/*.MDB/*.dbf/*.DBF
We have the problems with the office documents since 2 days and I can't
remember to have something changed in samba config.
I also red this article.

way locks are handled?
Does freeBSD support kernel oplocks?
I also compared this behavior with our Synology NAS-Server and there seems
to be no problem with handling locks.
Thanks for your help

OSX Server - Excel files
Hi, I am new to this list, so please excuse any redundancy in my
question.
I have 60 Windows XP users who are tied into three Mac OSX File -
Xserve file servers. There is one big problem - ... we are having
issues with Excel files, that on occasion, are not being recognized,
taking literally minutes to load and other quirky abnormalities. Excel
on the XP desktop machines will refuse to save

Ubuntu 8.04 breaks samba file locking
Just upgraded Saturday from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04.01. File locking in Samba is now
broken, meaning two different users can have the same file open at the same time
and edit it.
Server is RedHat 9.0 running Samba 2.2.7a-security-rollup-fix. This has been
working well for us for several years. Have one WinXP box accessing the server
using OOo 2.0. Have another couple of Win95 boxes.

Kernel oplocks are only needed if you access files from both
Samba and NFS or local FreeBSD processes. If that is not the
case, kernel...
