Possible Feature request
I've Looked over the list of Auth methods that dovecot can use But i
didn't see a option for a custom auth option.
Would it be possible to add in a way for dovecot to call a script to
check a users login info. have it able to retun the
the homedir,gid/uid, and weather or not the password matched.

Runas Question
Okay heres a weird question is there anyways to make dovecot run as root ?
Heres why:
I'm currently using XMail email server (smtp/pop3/virtual accounts). And I love using it. But it really must run as root. I've tryed all the non-root solutions for it. and really I'd prefer to have it run as root. And I'd like to really use dovecot as (on server with xmail). Currently I've

Possible Bug
Okay in dovecot.conf I set the fallowing settings
log_path = /var/log/dovecot
info_log_path = /var/log/dovecot
Then I setup log rotation for that file (using logrotate). But after it does the rotation. Dovecot dies.
Now I know why this happens. But should it ? To over come this I now have it set to stop dovecot and start dovecot after it's done dealing with the log file.

dovecot + vpopmail
I was just wondering how dovecot interacts with vpopmail. Does it just call the vchkpw and pass the username and password to it then wait for a it to tell dovecot weather the user is vaild or not ? Does vchkpw pass back the users homedir ?
PS. My plan is to just replace vchkpw with a script/program of own. that dovecot can call to auth a user again xmail passwd file. And using "auth_passdb

This is great I've been wanting to get rid of my NFS mounts for some time and have just the user MailDirs be local to the web server. And this will help alot !
