ZFS vs mpxio vs cfgadm in Solaris.
Folks,
I''m trying to figure out whether we should give ZFS / mpxio a shot
on one of our research servers, or simply skip it (as we have
previously).
In Nov 2009 Cindy responded to a thread concerning ZFS device
issues, cfgadm, and mpxio:
http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/zfs-discuss/2009-November/033496.html
I''ve got an x2270 with the Sun EZ-SAS HBA and external SATA JBODs
(not J4xxx). The external disks simply provide bulk storage; lousy
performance is not a concern, reliability is. For obscure reason...

cfgadm, luxadm changes in OpenSolaris Development snv_128a
We recently upgraded last week to OpenSolaris Development snv_128a and all things went fine, zpool still works, etc. Our disks come off a Hitachi Disk Array and we have 2 qLogic fiber cards in our server.
"cfgadm -al" use to report the cards and "luxadm probe" use to return all the disks on the array. "luxadm probe" now returns "ERROR: No Fibre Channel Adapters found." and "cfgadm -al" doesn''t report the cards which we find odd since the zpool is still...

Plugging in a hard drive after Solaris has booted up?
Hi guys,
I have a quick question, I am playing around with ZFS and here''s what I did.
I created a storage pool with several drives. I unplugged 3 out of 5 drives from the array, currently:
NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
gpool UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas
raidz1 UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas

OpenSolaris ZFS NAS Setup
If it''s of interest, I''ve written up some articles on my experiences of building a ZFS NAS box which you can read here:
http://breden.org.uk/2008/03/02/a-home-fileserver-using-zfs/
I used CIFS to share the filesystems, but it will be a simple matter to use NFS instead: issue the command ''zfs set sharenfs=on pool/filesystem'' instead of ''zfs set

Big send/receive hangs on 2009.06
So, I was running my full backup last night, backing up my main data
pool zp1, and it seems to have hung.
Any suggestions for additional data gathering?
-bash-3.2$ zpool status zp1
pool: zp1
state: ONLINE
status: The pool is formatted using an older on-disk format. The pool can
still be used, but some features are unavailable.
action: Upgrade the pool using ''zpool

mounting a copy of a zfs pool /file system while orginal is still active
Hello SUN gurus I do not know if this is supported, I have a created a zpool consisting of the SAN resources and created a zfs file system. Using third part software I have taken snapshots of all luns in the zfs pool. My question is in a recovery situation is there a way for me to mount the snapshots and import the pool while the original is still active. Right now all I am able to do is export

Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and 1TB Seagate Barracuda ES.2
...2. Once Grub finally finds the OS disk, OpenSolaris sits and hangs
at the splash screen (verbose doesn''t even work)
If I boot the system without any of these drives attached and then
attach one, I get "Device failed to power up", and I can''t configure
them with cfgadm or use them to create a pool.
Every other disk I''ve tried in the box appears to work perfectly fine,
so it appears to only be these ES.2s which are having a problem.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard

CyberPower on OpenIndiana
Hello,
I have a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD and I'm trying to get nut to see it under OpenIndiana. All search online suggested that it basically can't happen, but I decided to ask again, maybe things have changed since then.
The UPS can be seen by the system:

usb9/1.1 connected configured ok Mfg: CP1500PFCLCD Product: CRCA102-3I1 NConfigs: 1 Config: 0 <no cfg str descr>

Here comes the (partially incomplete) output of what I had, have done, and have now:

RAID-Z1 pool became faulted when a disk was removed.
...isk I thought was a dud, so I pulled the fifth disk in my array and
put the dud in. Sure enough, Solaris started spitting errors like there was
no tomorrow in dmesg, and wouldn''t use the disk. Ah well. Remove it, put the
original back in - hey, Solaris still thinks the disk is offline, and cfgadm
-c unconfigure [disk];cfgadm -c configure [disk] didn''t help - okay, sane
poweroff. Hey, this is going to take awhile to rescrub, why not switch to
the wide SCSI module for this disk array rather than the narrow one? Okay,
fine, put the module in (this module is known working and was, in f...

Sep 3 15:20:10 fb2 SCSI transport failed: reason ''timeout'': giving up
"cfgadm -al" or "devfsadm -C" didn''t solve the problem.
After a reboot ZFS recognized the drive as failed and all worked well.
Do we need to restart Solaris after a drive failure??

zfs boot error recovery
hi all,
i would like to ask some questions regarding best practices for zfs
recovery if disk errors occur.
currently i have zfs boot (nv62) and the following setup:
2 si3224 controllers (each 4 sata disks)
8 sata disks, same size, same type
i have two pools:
a) rootpool
b) datapool
the rootpool is a mirrored pool, where every disk has a slice (the s0,
which is 5 % of the whole disk) and this

mpt_sas multipath problem?
Greetings,
We''re trying out a new JBOD here. Multipath (mpxio) is not working,
and we could use some feedback and/or troubleshooting advice.
The OS is oi151a7, running on an existing server with a 54TB pool
of internal drives. I believe the server hardware is not relevant
to the JBOD issue, although the internal drives do appear to the
OS with multipath device names (despite the fact

Is SUNWhd for Thumper only?
I read Ben Rockwood''s blog post about Thumpers and SMART

package only work on a Thumper? Can I use this on my snv_101 system
with AMD 64 bit processor and nVidia SATA?

want to add more. It is easy to add for vm but how can i update fs in os?
I cannot use autoexpand because it doesn''t implemented in my system:

Expanding a ZFS pool disk in Solaris 10 on VMWare (or other expandable storage technology)
...needs more. I hoped ZFS autoexpand
would do the trick transparently, but it turned out some manual
labor is needed. Even though this was a single-disk pool with a
dedicated disk, the EFI label and ultimate Solaris partition and
slices did not detect the size change over several devfsadm''s,
cfgadm''s, exports, imports, reboots, formats and fdisks - only
when I entered some values by hand did things work out.
Many solutions just added a bigger disk, mirrored the pool and
removed the smaller disk, and were left with a bigger pool.
Sometimes for whatever architectural reason, this way...
