Bug in cfdisk?
...orking through Sander Van Vugt's "Beginning the Linux Command Line" (Apress), just for fun. Right now I'm just trying out all the examples in chapter 5, dedicated to managing partitions and logical volumes. After some work with fdisk (which I normally use), the book introduces cfdisk (which I've been using in Slackware days). Curiously enough, CentOS' cfdisk doesn't seem to work. I'm experimenting with two USB sticks connected to an old NEC Powermate, which appear as /dev/sda resp. /dev/sdb. I can access them with fdisk OK and partition them any way I want....

Retrive data from repartitioned / reformatted hard drive?
Hi, The title says it all. One of my clients showed me a 120 GB hard drive that his daughter accidentally formatted, according to him. I booted the first CD I had at hand - a Slackware 11.0 install CD - and launched cdfdisk /dev/hda. cfdisk informed me that there was even no partition table. So much for reformatting. cfdisk only shows me 120 GB of free space. Any way to retrive data on this hard drive? Some magic live distribution to read data on repartitioned / reformatted hard drives? any suggestions? thanks, Niki

Can''t install Windows 2003 on SLES10SP1
I finally have a xen server to play with stuff that''s causing me problems on my production servers. One of those problems is simply installing Windows 2003. Here''s what I do: Open virt-manager set up a new install: full virt 512 ram 20 gig sparse file boot off /dev/cdrom The install starts as you''d expect. When it gets to the formatting I tell it to format in NTFS.

XEN 3.4.1|HVM|physical disk access
Hello folks, i do not get access to a physical disk with xen. I would like to install windows xp as hvm to the physical partition /dev/sdb1. I partioned the disk with cfdisk. Filesystem type is Linux (83). In my eyes the filesystem using hvm is insignificant(?). I tried the following configurations; probably a lot more than this. #disk = [ ''phy:hda1,hda1,r'' ] (comment from xmexample.hvm form /ect/xen) disk = [ ''phy:/dev/sdb1,sda,w''...

Re-sizing qcow2 images
Hello All, I am using Centos 6.3 with libvirt 0.910 and qemu-kvm 0.12 I had to resize a qcow2 disk, and came across several issues; I used this command to resize the image: sudo -i /usr/bin/qemu-img /var/lib/libvirt/images/mydisk.img resize +100G . The disk is attached using virtio. I then tried to use parted from within the guest to resize the partition. The first problem was that the

Suggestions on building VM disks from scratch
...hat someone will have dealt with a similar problem. I need to define a procedure for last resort disaster recovery from an incremental file level backup of the root partition (and any others that are critical.) Now it is easy enough to create a raw virtual disk with dd, then to losetup and do a cfdisk and mkfs, then mount it and rsync the backup onto it. At this point I would like to be able to install grub and make the virtual disk bootable. I have 'issues' with the way grub does things and the way it seems to make certain assumptions for you. I'm running Debian 3.0 (testing/woody) so all programs (mkfs.ext3, fdisk, cfdisk) should be fairly close to the latest version released, and the kernel is 2.4.18-pre7aa2. enlarging partition and its filesystem
Hi all! I've got a VM at work running C6 on HyperV (no, its not my fault, that's what the company uses. I'd rather gag myself than own one of th ose things.) I ran out of disk space in the VM, so the admin enlarged the virtual disk. but now I realize I don't know how to enlarge the partition and its filesystem. I'll be googling, but in case I miss it, it'd be great if

Deleted from partition table
I accidentally removed an ext3 partition from the partition table. I know roughly where it started. Is there any way of finding the superblock and reconstructing it? TIA, Dave (Yes I have a backup of the important stuff!)

steps to add a new physical disk to existing LVM setup in new centos box?
...nd volume group "VolGroup00" using metadata type lvm2 [root at cow ~]# lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' [113.84 GB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01' [512.00 MB] inherit I'm curious if my 1-4 seem sane, or if I'll need to cfdisk and nuke the existing partitions on the disk once in the newer system, or if pvcreate will do what I need. If there is a preferred method to my madness, and you can save me from shooting a hole in my foot, appeciate any comments. Thanks in Advance, Jerry Queirolo

Syslinux + integrated flash disk
...Main image at /dev/loop0, then the offset 512 bytes after at /dev/loop1, allowing me to use /dev/loop0 as the disk with MBR and all and use /dev/loop1 against filesystem tools (this was the way it was done from factory, with a NT bootsector first then the NTFS starting 512 bytes after). - Used cfdisk and/or sfdisk against /dev/loop0 to change FS type to FAT 16 (latter one needs a --force, complains about having to assume CHS and about available size being 0). - mkdosfs against /dev/loop1 to format as FAT 16 - syslinux, version 2.10 with the -s switch against /dev/loop1, to make the FAT boota...
