Centralised logging with Gui and alerts?
Hi all, If logging all logs via syslog to a central syslog server that are all Centos based, what GUIs are out there to browse them etc. ? I know about splunk but don't want to go down that route. Also, some servers are hosted and would be best not sending their logs across the net to a central syslog (although we could openvpn them in), so can the same system be setup to receive logwatch

New line operator in mtext
Dear R Users, I'm finding that when I execute the following bit of code, that the new line argument is actually displayed as text in the graphics device. How do I avoid this happening? mtext(side=2, line=5.5, expression(paste("Monthly Summed Runoff (mm/month)", "/n", "and Summed Monthly Precipitation (mm x ",10^2,"/month)"))) I suspect that I've

DUNDi precache
Does anyone have any information on how to use DUNDi precaching? Mark Spencer made a post 2 years ago where he hinted it may be possible to configure DUNDi such that you could centralise your DUNDi registration info by using precaching, instead of having each DUNDi peer meshed with every other one... http://lists.digium.com/pipermail/dundi/2004-October/000189.html However, it seems that no

OT: Call for beta testers (well... perhaps late Alpha).
We've just launched the beta of a free service which is, really, still only JUST out of the alpha stages. http://www.voipmagnet.com The basic idea is this: it's an opt-in directory focused on VoIP contact info (with elements of social networking and privacy control). Again, the service is very rough, but we'd like input from the VoIP community. There are a good many things that are

Fedora Directory Authentication on CentOS 5
Hi, I am trying to set up a Fedora Directory server for centralised authentication. I configure the directory server, add a user called (via the Java GUI) test and then, using system-config-authentication, enable LDAP on both tabs. I then try to log-in using the test account I set up on the directory, but I get an error message in /var/log/messages: May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]:

mtime not updating on remote directory
Hello, I'm using rsync as part of a centralised config management for several servers. I'm trying to monitor the mtime of a particular directory and confirm that the remote copies are approximately as new as the the local master. However, mtime on that directory is not being synced. Here's my rsync command: cd $confdir && rsync -avpzR --checksum -I -e "ssh"

Support for merging LPK and hpn-ssh into mainline openssh?
...h (http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/) and the LPK (http://code.google.com/p/openssh-lpk/) into the mainline openssh. Adding lpk has been logged as a bug in bugzilla as They are two patches that I always apply as the performance boost from hpn-ssh is substantial to say the least, and centralisation of the authorized_keys into a LDAP server is a very helpful way to manage the authorized keys across a myriad of servers. Is there any chance these patches could get included into mainline openssh? Thanks Peter

Recycling Rule
Hi, I have an efficiency question. To centralise a dataset (in a data frame) I have been using: a <- mean(Data) Data <- t(t(Data)-a) ...to force row-wise recycling. Is there a better/more efficient/more elegant way than transposing the dataset twice? Thanks [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

centralized user authentication

I would start by testing IPA. Redhat is building out a set of enterprise management tools which include cobbler and spacewalk; I would think IPA will eventually be integrated into their mgt tools. That said, if

Re: Linux only Network: Samba ?? or Nis and NFs??
Hi, I'm trying to build an only Linux (RedHat 8.0) network. I've tried NIS(for centralised passwords) and NFS, seems to work OK. Sometimes my clients stop responding. I may be doing something wrong. I've just been told that all of this can be done with Samba. CEntralised User naes and passwords and homes. So that any user can logon from any linux workstation be validated by a server

Samba PDC + 2K/XP
Hey, I am just wondering how you enforce security (such as permissions) on local workstations while running Samba 2.2.x as a PDC with 2K/XP workstations? As some of us don't have or want 2000 Server to enforce things like policies etc... how do you all do it. E.g. If we want 'Administrator' to have access to all start menu etc... yet standard users to have only programs, no settings

Converting puppet client to servr
Is there an easy way to convert a puppet client into being a puppet master? Here''s the scenario. I''m using puppet to configure all my systems, and would like it to be able to deploy a new puppet master as well. We have systems worldwide so having local puppet masters is very desirable for fault tolerance. So Kickstart (via cobbler) installs a puppet client during the initial

Wierd Configuration
Hi Everyone, I have a strange network design problem and I suspect that Samba may be part of the solution. Any suggestions welcome. :-) Here goes: Two organisations are sharing a single network of 30 Win95/98 clients with a few XP workstations. The network is owned and managed by a third organisation and the Internet connection is not too hot. So far so good :-). Org-1 wants to pay for their own

ssh - NO SALE or NO GIVE ?
Thanks to everyone who has replied to my emails so far - to summarise: AIX allows setting of rlogin=false and and a su group, or a list of users that are permitted to "su" to root. ( or other functional ids ) This means with entries in /etc/ftpusers, it is possible to : 1/ Track who used root via sulog and or external logging 2/ Protect root even if the root password is compromised 3/
