Question on ldBands function in Hmisc package by Harrell
...path. I think
I have fixed this problem. But, when I tried to run the program, it still
opened up the MS-DOS Window and gave me another error message.
If you have tried this, please let me know how you did it. Thanks in
advance for your help.

goodness of fitting for a mixed distribution
Hi all!
i have done a fitting of experimental data using optim function and
setting up my mixed distribution logliklehood (it is a linear
combination of a normal and a weibull distribution). How can i test
the goodness of fit? I want to be able to say that my distribution fit

remote access
Hello!
I have such trouble: I like R, but often I don't have administrator
permissions to install R on some (not mine) computers.
Could you give me shell on any server with R installed in order to apply
R without installing it (simply with PuTTY).
Great thanks!

lattice-Internal
Hi,
The functions prepanel.default.bwplot() and lpretty() are not running in Deepayan's
barley example concerning vertical bars with the lattice function barchart().
Why, is there a restricted use for the package lattice-Internal?

Space between axis label and tick labels
I'm writing an publication in two column format and need to shrink some
plots. After increasing the axis labels it does not look nice at all.
The y-axis label and tick labels almost touch each other and the x-axis
tick labels expand into the plot instead of away from it. Is there a
better way than "cex" to control the:
1) font size of axis and tick labels
2) font thickness

Linux Standalone Server Suggestions for R
Hi All,
My group is looking for any suggestions on what to purchase to
achieve the most powerful number crunching system that $50k can buy.
The main application that will be used is R so input on what hardware
benefits R most will be appreciated. The requirements are that it be
a single standalone server (i.e. not a cluster solution), and it that
must be able to run unix/linux. If

PS: I apologies if this came thru in HTML format -- the formatting is
applied to "Plain Text" messages as the corporate MS-Exchange server level,
and I am trying to overcome that.

Where is MASS
Dear List:
I have been using the MASS package until 5 minutes ago. I just updated
some packages from CRAN, something happened and R crashed. I then
started R again and tried to source in some code that calls MASS, but
received an error that there is not a package called MASS.
I then went to install packages from CRAN and MASS was not visible as an
option and I then went to the CRAN website and

Intro to Programming R Book
I am new to R and am looking for a book that can help in learning to
program in R. I have looked at the R website suggested books but I am
still not sure which book best suite my needs. I am interesting in
programming, data manipulation not statistics. Any suggestions?

Edit function
Dear all R users,
I have a query on "Edit" function. Suppose I have a data frame named "data". I can use EDIT function to see the materials contained in data, by using the command:
> edit(data)
But when I close the window then again the materials contained in data is displayed in the command window. But I do not want to see these materials again. Can

fitting mixed models to censored data?
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out if there are any packages allowing
one to fit mixed models (or non-linear mixed models) to data
that includes censoring.
I've done some searching already on CRAN and through the mailing
list archives, but haven't discovered anything. Since I may well
have done a poor job searching I thought I'd ask here prior to
giving up.
I understand that

easing out of Excel
I know enough about R to be dangerous and our marketing people have asked me to "automate" some reporting. Data comes from an SQL source and graphs and various summaries are currently created manually in Excel. The raw information is invoicing records and the reporting is basically summaries by customer, region, product line etc.
With function such as aggregate(), hist() and pareto()

A "rude" question
Dear all,
I am beginner using R. I have a question about it. When you use it,
since it is written by so many authors, how do you know that the
results are trustable?(I don't want to affend anyone, also I trust
people). But I think this should be a question.
Thanks,
Ming
