Any tools for working with US 2000 census data?
I've been given the job of extracting some data from the United States 2000 census (files at http://www2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/Summary_File_2/Maryland/all_ Maryland.zip 52M). I'm only interested in Census Block Groups (CBGs) located within Baltimore City, Maryland. Additionally, I just have to extract certain data fields. I think I'll be using Summary File 2. Th...

Generalized nonlinear mixed model function?
...Western Ecological Research Center Sequoia and Kings Canyon Field Station 47050 Generals Highway #4 Three Rivers, CA 93271-9651 USA ----------------------------------------------------------- The motivating problem is estimating average trends in forest mortality rates with unequally spaced census intervals. The census interval has an exponential effect on survival (i.e., p = annual survival, year.interval = census interval, and p^year.interval; annual morality = 1 - p), leading me to use a nonlinear model. Our data are composed of counts of live and dead trees, so I?ll need to use a bino...

Census ARIMA x-12 seasonal adjustment in R?
Hello, I am new to usin R - which is a great tool - and would like to know if R has a seasonal adjustment program for time series and/if it incorporates the Census Bureau's ARIMA x-12 seasonal adjustment program in any way? Thanks so much! Tony [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

survival object
...nalysis with library(survival)from a data set that looks like this: I followed a bunch of naturally germinated seedlings of an annual plant from germination to death (none made it to reproduce, and died in a period of ~60 days after germination.) I also know the size of the seed of every individual censused. So I am trying to analyze seedling survival as a function of seed size. I performed 5 censuses in unequal intervals of time starting 15 days after germination until everyone died. Does that make my data right censored? So I have the following variables: seed size (as a continuous variable and a...

[R-pkgs] acs version 2.1.0 update: download and analyze data from the US Census in R
We are pleased to announce the release of version 2.1.0 of the "acs" package, now available on CRAN <http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/acs/index.html>. The package allows users to download, manipulate, analyze, and present demographic data from the U.S. Census, with special tools and methods to simplify the tasks of working with estimates and standard errors contained in data from the American Community Survey (ACS). Important: version 2.1.0 of the package is a "minor update" in terms of features, but it includes a number of low-level tweaks...

"Error in plot.window(...) : invalid 'xlim' value" from plot(...par(new = TRUE))
...im values make sense, the xlim values are ... of an unexpected type altogether. And when I re-tried the plot() invocation, but without the "par()" argument, the xlim passed to plot.window() was fine, and the plot was OK. Completely off topic, but amusing?
...s: Thought that many on this list might find this amusing, perhaps even a bit relevant. Hope it's OK: ************ WASHINGTON - The government's estimate of the number of Americans without health insurance fell by nearly 2 million Friday, but not because anyone got health coverage. The Census Bureau <http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=Census+Bureau> said it has been overstating the number of people without health insurance since 1995. The bureau blamed the inflated numbers on a **12-year-old computer programming error**.[emphasis added -- BG] ************** So what does...

negative binomial regression
I would like to know if it is possible to perform negative binomial regression with rate data (incidence density) using the glm.nb (in MASS) function. I used the poisson regression glm call to assess the count of injuries across census tracts. The glm request was adjusted to handle the data as rates using the offset parameter since the population of census tracts can vary by a factor of three. eg. Call: glm(formula = inj ~ lp + rdm, family = poisson(), data = ww, offset = log(pop)) Deviance Residuals: Min...

After deleting cases I may have a dataset with 7 million+ rows and 50+ columns. Will R handle a datafile of this size? If so, how? Return value associated with a factor
I am using the code below to extract census tract information. save.tract$state, save.tract$county and save.tract$tract are returned as factors.
