+ or \ as winbind separator?

Samba HOWTO Section 21.5 example 21.5.1:
"# separate domain and username with '+', like DOMAIN+username
winbind separator = +
page cccxxiv: "The only obvious indication that Winbind is being user is
that user and group names take the form DOMAIN\{}user and
DOMAIN\{}group".
What is then the winbind separator? Is it '+' or is it '\'? Or should I
choose it according to my taste?
