Samba goes catatonic...?
...it lists failed authentications by some users, as expected, files that weren't found, as expected. Nothing alarming (I think) is listed here. QUESTIONS: --- Is it normal to see several SMBD processes in a ps -A command? --- What else can help indicate what may cause this Samba server to go catatonic? All help and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! -Ryan Beisner */ The source is indeed with me. */

attempt to access beyond end of device and livelock
Hi Dongyang, Yan, When testing BTRFS with RAID 0 metadata on linux-3.3, we see discard ranges exceeding the end of the block device [1], potentially causing dataloss; when this occurs, filesystem writeback becomes catatonic due to continual resubmission. The reproducer is quite simple [2]. Hope this proves useful... Thanks, Daniel --- [1] attempt to access beyond end of device ram0: rw=129, want=8452072, limit=4096000 ... --- [2] modprobe brd rd_size=2048000 (or boot with ramdisk_size=2048000) mkfs.btrfs -m ra...

firefox and D state
Previously when firefox went catatonic to the point that I could not even scroll, its CPU usage had gone to 100%+. Now top tells me that firefox, Web Content (with a space) or sometimes kswap... has process state D, uninterruptable sleep. Any suggestions on how to deal? I often have a lot of tabs open, so discovering the right one was...

Experiences with Word 2000, SmartSuite 9
...hame... SmartSuite installs up to the point of ``configuring software'' then puts up endless messages (1 a second, I think) about returning 0 without checking. If I install SmartSuite under 'doze and run it from WINE, it opens WordPro, puts up the starting dialog box, and goes totally catatonic (with --managed windows I can use the dialog box as a paintbrush). MSPaint and WordPad seem to work flawlessly. Windows media player seems to work, albeit slowly (Rage 64 video card, XFree86 4.0.1). Internet Explorer complains about lots of SHLWAPI functions and dies. I can't seem to get WINE...

IBM x226 lockups, convert CentOS to RHEL 3.0
...pings, no "caps-lock" lights, no kernel panic indicators, nothing in the logs to indicate the problem. Other times the machine may lock up three times in one day. At the last call to me he did report that the hard drive lights flicker every once in a while during one of the systems catatonic states, but other than that there was no indication of life. We have been in contact with IBM servicce and have run their hardware tests, which perform flawlessly. We have now come to the point where they claim that "CentOS is not a supported OS" and even though they acknowledge Cen...

Rapid transfers cause kernel panic
.... We are running Mandrake 7.0 and Samba 2.0.6. We are no longer using the distro included with Mandrake - we actually downloaded the 2.0.6 release and recompiled. Downloading from Samba shares causes no problems - and downloads are frequent and heavy - but uploading similar amounts of data leaves a catatonic server at best and a kernel panic at worst. Dropping several > 1Mb files on a share will usually do it. This has been the case using a dual processor Celeron 433 and a single processor AMD K6-2. Both systems have plenty of RAM and disk space and run fine with NFS. We first noticed the problem on...

LVM hatred, was Re: /boot on a separate partition?
...2015 >Btrfs may eventually obsolete a lot of > uses of LVM, but that's down the road. LVM is the emacs of storage. It'll be here forever. Btrfs doesn't export (virtual) block devices like LVM can, so it can't be a backing for say iSCSI. And it's also at the moment rather catatonic when it comes to VM images. This is mitigated if you set xattr +C at image create time (it must be zero length file for +C to take). But if you cp --reflink or snapshot the containing subvolume, then COW starts to happen for new writes to either copy; overwrites to either copies newly written block...

Help w/ winbind & re-bind after error Referral
...l three of our AD domains. 'wbinfo -t' succeeds as well. SAMBA shares map correctly on our XP systems for users who only have AD accts., and those w/ LDAP accts. So far, so good. But now, when you run 'id <user>' or 'groups <user>', the systems gets fairly catatonic, and smb / winbind must be restarted to regain sanity. hard-hang on snapshot rename
...''s no "zfs rename -r" function, so I tried to write a crude one on my own: zfs list -rHo name -t filesystem pool | while read name; do zfs rename $name at foo $name at bar done The results were disappointing. The system was extremely busy for a moment and then went completely catatonic. Most network traffic appeared to stop, though I _think_ network driver interrupts were still working. The keyboard and mouse (traditional PS/2 types; not USB) went dead -- not even keyboard lights were working (nothing from Caps Lock). The disk light stopped flashing and went dark. The CPU tem...

I''ve been struggling for several days with this problem following an uneventful (with the exception of the proprietary nvidia driver I had to uninstall) boot into the SLES 10 domain 0 kernel. out of HDD space - zfs degraded
Overnight I was running a zfs send | zfs receive (both within the same system / zpool). The system ran out of space, a drive went off line, and the system is degraded. This is a raidz2 array running on FreeBSD 8.1-STABLE #0: Sat Sep 18 23:43:48 EDT 2010. The following logs are also available at http://www.langille.org/tmp/zfs-space.txt <- no line wrapping This is what was running: #
