extlinux reports "./extlinux: path /media/disk doesn't match device /dev/sda4"
Hello list,
in a previous post I mentioned I had managed to make
USB-Stick with 2048
byte sectors bootable. In fact I wiped out my Linux
partitions
bootrecord. This was with an old version of extlinux
as still
distributed by openSuSE.
Interestingly enough the current version
syslinux-3.61-pre2, spares my
hard disk, but still seems to live under the
impression it is the USB
stick.
The setup is

Looking for a casual contractor to write R functions and help integrate with Excel
We are a small consulting company that uses R to automate several data
extraction fuctions from SPSS files -- most notably we create powerpoint
slides from a script in Excel (using VBA) which calls R to extract data and
place into Excel using RExcel. We're not specialists, and don't really have
the time to understand R. Our CIO is the only person who even vaguely
understands R, and he does

syslinux does not interpret backslash
Hello list,
while I managed to install syslinux and have it boot,
there seems to be
a problem with interpreting filenames. It looks for
files in /boot but
at the same time does not realize that the "/" is not
part of the
filename. It prompts me with boot: then every filename
I type is set to
2 characters "." 3 characters i.e vmlinuz would appear
as vm.lin. To me
it looks like

Samba server slow down after serving more than casual data
Hello,
I am currently running Fedora 15 on an x86_64 system that acts as a
whole house server for named, dhcp, nfs, nis, htpp, samba, etc
The system is currently running samba-3.5.11-71 with kernel
2.6.40.6-0.fc15.x86_64. The system is fully patched as of today.
However, this issue has existed for at least 2 years and I am at a loss
to debug it.
I have a simple samba configuration for

Requesting unban from irc channel
man_in_shack banned me during a casual conversation where i was explaining my dual x server wine setup, saying I was contradicting myself. I obviously wasn't trying to contradict myself, if I did, and I don't see how this is ban-worthy under any circumstance.

R and Data Storage
Where I work a lot of people end up using Excel spreadsheets for storing
data. This has limitations and maybe some less than obvious problems. I'd
like to recommend a uniform way for storing and archiving data collected
in the department. Most of the data could be stored in simple csv type
files but it would be nice to have something that stores more information
about the variables and units.

'Too many authentication failures' nuisance
I have several ssh keys in the ~/.ssh directory of my desktop machine.
As a result whenever I try to connect to a system which uses password
authentication I get the "Too many authentication failures" error.
Yes, I know I can get round this by setting PreferredAuthentications
but this is rather a nuisance to have to do individually for all
systems that use password authentication. It

LLD's default --build-id choice
Nico brought up this topic and made me think whether the current choice of
--build-id was the right one or not.
Currently, we compute a FNV1 hash for an entire resulting file and store it
to .note.gnu.build-id section. It's one of the slowest parts of the linker
because reading every byte takes time. IIRC, it usually takes about 10% of
total link time.
In the first place, I believe it was

RHN Up2date Cruft: can I dump it?
Got part 1 - xx of back up working, so figured it's a good time to look
for stuff to jettison... casually of course. Like paperwork,
documentation, ... it's low on the priority list with GB so cheap these
days.
Anyway, 42M in /var/spool/up2date. Headers and such. I use only yum
after my first month or so of CentOS. Can I dump that and similar non-
config stuff?
Or does it have some

[Fwd: Re: extlinux reports "./extlinux: path /media/disk doesn't match device /dev/sda4"]
How often is this the case ?
???

extlinux installed on it.
I think in most cases people try to make _some_other_
disk bootable. If I boot with extlinux as the
bootloader
why should I want to install it again ? Apart from
that it would then require -u not -i.

Activity
How is it our activity level on RubyForge continues to fall? What
exactly makes up ''activity''? Does anyone know? I would have thought
with all the commits and the release that our activity figures would be
way up there.

Winbind cache problem after upgrade to 3.0.25b.
Have just upgraded from 3.0.14a to 3.0.25b.
On starting winbindd it puts the following in /var/log/messages:
initialize_winbindd_cache: clearing cache and re-creating with version number 1
All the winbind UID/GID mappings are lost and it starts again from
scratch. Hence all file ownership / ACLs on this samba server become
invalid.
Anyone else seen this?
Why does it see fit to destroy this

[LLVMdev] !!! 3.2 Release branch patching and the Code Owners
Hello,
Recent code owner activities have led to
what I would call loss of referential integrity
in the CODE_OWNERS.TXT file.
Changes are fine but the information in the
CODE_OWNERS.TXT does not allow to positively
identify code owner of the particular
file or patch.
The problem stems from the usage of the
"description (D)" field which is overloaded
with meaning. Most people put

Textmate Rails Plugin Cheat Sheet

So i fired up trusty OmniGraffle and quickly created a little Cheat

Melbourne Asterisk Users meet next Thursday
Hi all,
If you're in Melbourne Australia and interested in Asterisk, you're
invited to join us for a casual evening to talk about Asterisk, VOIP,
networks, and just generally get geeky about IP phone stuff.
Ultimately, I think it would be interesting and useful to turn this
into a monthly get-together, so I'd like to talk about that too.
Anyone with an interest is welcome; from

Proposal for New R List: Criticism? Comments?
Folks:
I would like to propose a new R list, tentatively labeled r-contents. I wish
to briefly explain the purpose and format here and solicit public comments,
pro or con, so feel free to criticize or suggest a better name and other
improvements or alternatives.
R presently consists of a suite of about a dozen core recommended packages
and several hundred contributed packages comprising
