permission bits clobbered
A file is chmod 600. It gets opened on Windows, and it gets changed to 644. Now the secrets are exposed to all users. This is bad! This happens if the user does: N:\> echo foobar > secretfile But it does stay at chmod 600 if he does (append instead of truncate): N:\> echo foobar >> secretfile Why does this happen? The "create mask" parameter is set to 644. I do not

Here's the idea. 1) Authentication should be managed centrally on the server. 2) User home directories should also be on the server. 3) Users should all have disk quotas, something like 1 GB per user. 4) Some shared directories should be read/write for

I have a fresh installation of Windows 2000. I added the machine account to the samba server but no matter what I do, I can't get it to join the domain. I believe the problem lies with my samba server. The new "net" commandis very confusing to me and I believe I messed something up.I am now unable to login with the root user no matter what; which is required for loggin Win2K into a

R and XML -- a near perfect combination?
Please ignore my ignorance, I'm new to R, but starting a longish project that will use R a lot. (a computer scientist learning about stats at the same time). Did anybody alreay write a XML parser for R? XML, as we will have tons of data-interchange with all sorts of other programs and XML is good for giving meaning to raw data. I checked the FAQs and the documentation, but didn't find

adding printers from netlogon script
I don't know the final answer BUT if you have something simmilar to a cyber-cafe LAN (I mean, users use all the computers, and maybe some users come back to login with the same name) then you have to install a printer only once in a computer, loging as the administrator and installing drivers. Then what users will have to do is JUST add the printer without installing. I know that it's

Win2k clients problem after updating system
Hello all samba users and programmers, Since I changed my system and reinstalled samba funny things happen in my net. I used to work with a Gentoo system and now I've got installed a Knoppix 3.2 Debian, but by now I don't think it's interesting for the problem I've got. What I did was: - install samba 3.0.0-final - copy the old smb.conf file to the path in the new system

I can't still get any user to login but the ones that must be in cache in the clients (thanks again Thomas). So, I'll give you the logs to see if anybody detects something strange... The users can perform a 'smbclient -L
