I just upgraded an HP-UX 11.23 IA 64 server to Samba 3.5.6, and one of the shares would not work. It showed up in testparm as valid, but nobody could connect to it. I shortened the length of the share name from 12 to 8 characters, and it now works. My pc is running Vista, and authentication is via our domain controllers. Downgrading samba and smbclient to 4.11.3 DOES help. @Andrew, let me first clean up with kernel/samba versions, set log level to 10 and log limit to 0, delete all logs and repeat the whole exercise.
