resilver of older root pool disk
This is a hypothetical question that could actually happen:
Suppose a root pool is a mirror of c0t0d0s0 and c0t1d0s0
and for some reason c0t0d0s0 goes off line, but comes back
on line after a shutdown. The primary boot disk would then
be c0t0d0s0 which would have much older data than c0t1d0s0.
Under normal circumstances ZFS would know that c0t0d0s0
needs to be resilvered. But in this case c0t0d0s0 is the boot

zfs sparc boot "Bad magic number in disk label"
Hello,
I recently installed SunOS 5.11 snv_91 onto a Ultra 60 UPA/PCI with OpenBoot 3.31 and two 300GB SCSI disks. The root file system is UFS on c0t0d0s0. Following the steps in ZFS Admin I have attempted to convert root to ZFS utilizing c0t1d0s0. However, upon "init 6" I am always presented with:
Bad magic number in disk label
can''t open disk label package
My Steps:
1) format 1 -> Partition -> Modify -> Free hog -> All available to slice 0 -> label > quit
2) zpool create pool c0t1d0s0

zpool split problem?
Zpool split is a wonderful feature and it seems to work well,
and the choice of which disk got which name was perfect!
But there seems to be an odd anomaly (at least with b132) .
Started with c0t1d0s0 running b132 (root pool is called rpool)
Attached c0t0d0s0 and waited for it to resilver
Rebooted from c0t0d0s0
zpool split rpool spool
Rebooted from c0t0d0s0, both rpool and spool were mounted
Rebooted from c0t1d0s0, only rpool was mounted
It seems to me for consistency rpool should not have bee...

zfs root, jumpstart and flash archives
I understand that currently, at least under Solaris 10u6, it is not
possible to jumpstart a new system with a zfs root using a flash archive
as a source.
Can anyone comment as to whether this restriction will pass in the near
term, or if this is a while out (6+ months) before this will be possible?
Thanks,
Jerry

Get your SXCE on ZFS here!
With the release of the Nevada build 90 binaries, it is now possible to install SXCE directly onto a ZFS root filesystem, and also put ZFS swap onto a ZFS filesystem without worrying about having it deadlock. ZFS now also supports crash dumps!
To install SXCE to a ZFS root, simply use the text-based installer, after choosing "Solaris Express" from the boot menu on the DVD.

Best Practices recommendation on x4200
Greetings all-
I have a new X4200 that I''m getting ready to deploy. It has four 146 GB SAS drives. I''d like to setup the box for maximum redundancy on the data stored on these drives. Unfortunately, it looks like ZFS boot/root aren''t really options at this time. The LSI Logic controller in this box only supports either a RAID0 array with all four disks, or a RAID 1

Is ZFS efficient for large collections of small files?
Is ZFS efficient at handling huge populations of tiny-to-small files -
for example, 20 million TIFF images in a collection, each between 5
and 500k in size?
I am asking because I could have sworn that I read somewhere that it
isn''t, but I can''t find the reference.
Thanks,
Brian

"no pool_props" for OpenSolaris 2009.06 with old SPARC hardware
...2009.06 from SXCE snv_98.
I can''t use AI Installer because OpenPROM is version 3.27.
So I built IPS from source, then created a zpool on a spare drive and installed OS 2006.06 on it
To make the disk bootable I used:
installboot -F zfs /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0
using the executable from my new rpool.
But when I boot my new disk, I get the error "no pool_props" and the booting process returns to prompt with "Fast Device MMU miss".
I read OpenPROM 4.x was needed because of AI ? Did I miss something ?
Can you enlighten me ?
Thanks you...

multiple disk failure
Hi,
I am using FreeBSD 8.2 and went to add 4 new disks today to expand my
offsite storage. All was working fine for about 20min and then the new
drive cage started to fail. Silly me for assuming new hardware would be
fine :(
The new drive cage started to fail, it hung the server and the box
rebooted. After it rebooted, the entire pool is gone and in the state
below. I had only written a few
