help me....
Life times of one brand of light bulb were observed. Life hours of nine light
bulbs were 898, 720, 354, 405, 620, 54, 229, 306, 890. There were three more
light bulbs that were still burning after 1000 hours. It is common to assume
the life time of a light bulb follows an exponential distribution. With the
observed data find the MLE of the parameter of the exponential distribution...

Nut issue or MGE issue?
Hi,
I took the advice of Daniel O'Connor, found out what variables I
had available to me, and put them in the conf. So now it looks like :
[ellipse]
driver = mge-shut
port = /dev/cuaa0
desc = "UPS"
lowbatt = 5
offdelay = 120
let the UPS charge up fully, 24 hours.
I plugged a single lamp into it, with a 60W bulb.

Dummy variables model
Hi, all!
Anyone know an easy way to specify the following model.
Panel dataset, with stock through time, by firm.
I want to run a model of y on a bunch of explanatory variables, and one
dummy for each firm, which is 1 for observations that come from firm i,
and 0 everywhere else. I have over 200 firms (and a factor variable that
contains a firm identifier).
Any easy way of going about

My Back-UPS RS 1000 went haywire, any ideas?
Is the battery old? PbAc ones usually last for 2-3 years and then degrade.
Should be a field-replaceable part.
Some 20 years ago I had an APC BackUPS become a glorified power strip every
few years, so when the wall power disappeared - load went down immediately.
It was also beeping about battery replacement (but in the closet, was not
often noticed quickly). This is also a way for you to check if

R users:
I'd like to get some insight on an error I encounter when attempting to
work with two moderately sized sets of time series data. FYI - I'm
using the following versions of R and supporting packages on a Windows

- R version 2.4.1 (2006-12-18)
- zoo version 1.2-2
- chron version 2.3-10
The two time series I'm working with are from the summer of 2004 and

Processor Size
Can someone give me an idea of the processor power I will need for 1 x
TDM240 with 2xquad FXO's and 8 sip phones/ATA's on a quite 100Mbit LAN.
The machine we have available of hand is a P4 1GHz with 768MB RAM.

Re: Sweex UPS 500VA and NUT problem
Arjan,
I am forwarding your email to the nut-upsuser mailing list. I am not
an expert on the Powermust driver; hopefully somebody on the mailing
list will be able to help you!

Rails on FreeBSD or OSX
Hello everyone-
I was just reading the article on Rails at O''Reilly and one of those
little light bulbs over my head went off - what a GREAT tool.
I tried to install both Ruby on my Mac PowerBook without much luck and
then tried to install Ruby and Rails on a FreeBSD server I have. I am
running into some odd errors - so, my question is - can you point me to
some tech resources for either of t...

Questions about Eaton 5E 1, 100W 2, 200VA 6-Outlet UPS
I can't seem to get the longer battery tests to actually run:
test.battery.start
test.battery.start.deep
Both appear to leave the battery voltage at line-power levels; while the
quick test does have a notable voltage delta.
Are there any other tests I can perform or ways that I can help gather data
to get the longer tests supported?
I borrowed a 60W light bulb (instead of one of the

Or at least post your smb.conf, we tend to base our diagnosis on it.

read.zoo - combining two columns with date and time respectively into one index column?
I have three columns in my raw data: date, time, and dry bulb temperature:
http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/file/n4495326/weathDataSDCoron.txt
weathDataSDCoron.txt
The date format is %Y%m%d and the time format is %H:%M. Any ideas on how to
read it in such that it looks at the first two columns and then merges it
into one column combining both the date and time?

Quiet 24 port POE gig switch
A little off topic but....
I need to put a 24 port Gig PoE switch into a small office - no computer
room / rack etc. All CAT5 terminates near the owners desk (smart huh?).
I want to put a PoE switch in place, with 24 ports and Gig speed. Everyone
I've researched so far is LOUD...
Anyone know of a quiet one?
Thanks

dropping rows
Hi!
Sorry for asking a trivial questions, but I can't seem to figure this out.
I have a dataframe called master containing 30-odd variables.
In this dataframe, I have observations across these 30 variables from
1930 to 2003 (I've made a "year" variable). How can I drop all rows for
which the year is less than 1960? I'm assuming something with ifelse()
but I can't

Server not shutting down before power loss
Hi I hope someone can please help.
I have an Ubuntu Server running 14.04.3 LTS and using an APC ES550 UPS
connected via USB.
I've installed Nut and can see it does monitor the UPS correctly and give
the correct stats with battery percentage etc.
But on doing a "real" test and unplugging the UPS from the power supply,
after watching the battery drop slowly suddenly the server just

Server not shutting down before power loss
...ars in archives,
first disconnect batteries & check voltage of each battery, - dead easy,
Then much more important: calculate internal resistance of each battery.
Batteries go bad after some years, even on trickle charge.
Measure voltage drop when driving a load such as 1 or a few car
headlamp bulbs in parallel. Then its simply Ohms law V=IR,
If voltage drops from say 13V to 11V & if you use 1 headlamp that
uses maybe 4 amps, then 13-11 / 4 = 2/4 = 0.5 which is on high side,
you dont want higher, better 0.3 or less.
Your UPS for PC's will prob. want a lot more than 4 amps, so low

lags in regressions
Hi!
I am trying to get R to run regressions for me of a variable on lagged
differences of itself.
Specifically:
x-x(-1) = a + b1(x(-1)-rx(-2))+b2(x(-4)-rx(-5))+e
I need to do this a lot of times, altering the value of r.
What I've been trying to do was to use the lag() command to create
lagged versions of these variables and then constructing these
differences by hand (i.e. creating
