Can't build kernel with ndis
I am trying to build FreeBSD update, STABLE branch, and buildkernel apparently snagged on ndis, which I don't want to do without. According to "man ndis", I need in kernel config
options NDISAPI

HOW TO Enable IPSec for FreeBSD.......???
...C
/usr/src/sys/i386/conf/MYKERNEL
Then, I added the following three lines to the options
section of /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/MYKERNEL:
options IPSEC
options IPSEC_ESP
options IPSEC_DEBUG
After that I recompile the kernel with the following
command:
# cd /usr/src
# make buildkernel KERNCONF=IPSEC && make
installkernel KERNCONF=IPSEC
And also installed IKE support on my system with the
following command using racoon:
cd /usr/ports/security/racoon
make install clean
Afterall completion of build, still IPSec support is
not appearing in the system. Suggest me,is there...

DTrace merged ready for 7.1
...ded that it was
for certain eyes only (and not yours, or mine).
I have added a note to src/UPDATING mentioning this and a link to the
documentation.
I want 7.1 release to be built with a GENERIC kernel containing not only the DTrace
hooks, but also the CTF data, so I have defaulted the 'make buildkernel' to
turn on CTF generation. If you are building a kernel and modules without the
KDTRACE_HOOKS option, then you should do a 'make WITHOUT_CTF=1 buildkernel' to
avoid generating the CTF data (although that won't hurt).
For all builds other than 'buildkernel', CTF generation...

buildkernel errors with "options SMBFS"
...attempted builds on the exact same kernel config file, without the

I'm not terribly concerned about this, as I was just going to play around with mounting
some NT exports, but it would be nice to know what is causing this.

FreeBSD 4.4-REL to FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE upgrade problem.
...aved 4.4-REL kernel. The error I get is along the lines of:
Mounting root from ufs:/dev/ad4s1a
Root mount failed: 16
At first I got this error using a custom kernel configuration known as WWW,
but after getting this error I built a new kernel based on GENERIC:
# cd /usr/src
# make update
# make buildkernel
# make installkernel
# reboot
Per /usr/src/UPDATING there was a change in the ATA drive at 4.5-REL, but
it mentioned running mergemaster to create the new devices, and according
to /usr/src/Makefile I shouldn't do that until I get past the current stage
(which is where I am stuck):

Hardening production servers
Greetings,
Apologies if this is not the appropriate list, but my questions are about
best practices in maintaining production servers (so I believe I can justify
a post in -stable, short of a -release list :)
I maintain a modest installation of 6 FreeBSD servers. They're CVSUP'd to
RELENG_4_8 (I make buildworld on each individually) and I portupgrade ports
as necessary. In an attempt to
