in_place_edit-like functionality in my controller

Here''s some test code I tried to make work (from my controller):
def do_some_edit(object, field)
logger.info("We are editing")
end
do_some_edit(:item, :title)
But all I keep getting is an error telling me:
undefined method `do_some_edit'' for Admin::BudgetController:Class
I would say that do_some_edit is defined indeed but maybe I''m missing
something here.
I hope someone out there can enlightent me :-)
