Frustrating inability to boot amd64
At this point, I've been through 4 AMD64 motherboards. Commonly,
AE_BAD_CHARACTER stops ACPI (or apic?) from figuring out the system
--- this has happened on 3 out of four boards. On this latest board,
it can turn off APIC. If I do that, FreeBSD hangs after detecting the
disks. The only "wrong" thing on the screen is

Hello~!~
Just saying hello and I''m looking forward to seeing all the cool camping stuff
on this list.
I''m just starting out with Ruby and have a long way to go. I hope that I can
learn a lot here.
Adam: sounds really interesting.
_why: My condolences about those bruises. I assume they''re from the pelting

R-OT list needed?
The Iraq Statistics thread is a very interesting topic,
and no doubt a lot of us would like to chip in with our
views and comments -- indeed we are likely to bring a
more discriminating view to such discussion than might
be the case on many other lists.
So if this took on a life of its own then it could become
extensive. At which point the R-help admin would quite
rightly call time on us!
Yet I

6.1-BETA4-i386-disc2.iso - only usr/share/doc, no usr/src?
Does the 6.1-BETA4-i386-disc2.iso contain only usr/share/doc, or for
some reason i am unable to see anything else? I was looking for
usr/src (and for a odd chance to have usr/ports); i suppose those
two trees would be available somewhere on some disc for RELENG_6_1.
I mounted the image as ...
mdconfig -a -t vnode -f /path/to/6.1-BETA4-i386-disc2.iso -u 0
mount -t cd9660 /dev/md0 /mnt

Rails on Tomcat or JBoss?
Hi all,
The Rails book talks about running Rails under Apache, but is there a
(relatively) easy way to deploy it to either Tomcat or JBoss? Is the CGI
servlet the only option?
Thanks,
Ken

ifelse problem - bug or operator error
Hi R-Helpers,
I don't think I need to post a dataset for this question but if I do, I
can. Anyway, I am having a lot of trouble with the ifelse command.
Here is my code:
vn$PM.DIST_flag <- ifelse( (vn$PM.EXP > 0.0) & (vn$PM.DIST.TOT != 1.0), 1,
0 )
And here is my output that doesn't make ANY sense:
PM.EXP PM.DIST.TOT PM.DIST_flag 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 177502 1 0 31403

pam_radius fail open?
Okay, I guess I?ll be the first to take Colin Percival up in that the
following statement applies to me:
?If you find a security problem -- or even if you find something which
might possibly be a security problem but you're not certain if it is or
not -- then please let us know.?
I recently installed pam_radius according to the instructions located at
the following address:

Tabulation with ENTER key
Dear all,
I think this can be interesting for others too. For a while I tried to
solve that problem - how to tabulate with ENTER/RETURN key too and not
only with TAB.
You know the problem - you are entering a lot of numbers from numeric
keypad but you need to go far left to press TAB. This prevents one-hand
data entry and prohibits web apps to be used by accountants, for instance.
Here is a

Could someone email me with the code for glm.nb ?
Hi -- subject says all. I just want the code for that function,
which I guess was in Venables and Ripley as early as 1994.
Well, and for any of the sub-functions that glm.nb calls. I
can't install the entire MASS library.
If the code for just glm.nb (again, don't want to touch the MASS
library, last time I tried to install it was a complete nightmare and
fiasco) is somewhere on a

using "plot" with time series object - "axes = FALSE" option does not appear to work
Dear R-help,
I am attempting to plot data using standard R plot utilities. The
data was retrieved from FRED (St. Louis Federal Reserve) using the
package quantmod. My question is NOT about quantmod. While I
retrieve data using quantmod, I am not using its charting utility. I
have been having success using the standard R "plot" utilities to this
point with this type of data.

Suggestions on initial CentOS 4.3 Install packages
Hello, all...
I'm attempting to learn Linux (on a CentOS setup) by doing something
productive at the same time. I've already installed it twice...once with
a "full, just install everything" setup and another by following the
Perfect CentOS 4.3 Web Server Setup instructions on HowToForge.com.
Though I've had issues with both, I have a lot of patience and time is

best choice of user database file to work with postfix?
I'm setting up a Postfix and Dovecot combination. What I want to do is have
a user database that (1) is not running from some engine (so not LDAP or SQL
or such) ... and (2) is completely disassociated from system users (e.g.
most email users are not in /etc/passwd and most /etc/passwd users are not
email users). Ideal would be a one-file solution, which can be managed by
text editing or

XHCI umass support breaks between r248085 and r252560 on 9-STABLE
Three different external hard drives (Seagate, Western Digital and noname USB 3.0 enclosure) refused to be recognized as the umass devices. Reverting /usr/src/sys/dev/bsd/controller to r248085, building and loading just xhci module makes drives appear again. Below are snippets from the log in both cases:

Excel
A common process when data is obtained in an Excel spreadsheet is to save
the spreadsheet as a .csv file then read it into R. Experienced users
might have learned to be wary of dates (as I have) but possibly have not
experienced what just happened to me. I thought I might just share it with
r-help as a cautionary tale.
I received an Excel file giving patient details. Each patient had an ID

SSH scans vs connection ratelimiting
Gang,
For months now, we're all seeing repeated bruteforce attempts on SSH.
I've configured my pf install to ratelimit TCP connections to port 22
and to automatically add IP-addresses that connect too fast to a table
that's filtered:
table <lamers> { }
block quick from <lamers> to any
pass in quick on $ext_if inet proto tcp from any to ($ext_if) port 22
