Browsing Issues
Hi - I'm having some problems with network browsing using a Samba PDC (3.0.22) and I'd appreciate any hints that might push me in the right direction. One of the problems is that I am on a very crowded subnet that is being used by several different groups. There are a two separate WinNT/2000-style domains active on this network as well as an AD domain controller. Here are the

Servers disappear from Network neighborhood
I am using Samba-PDC-LDAP with samba-3.0.20b-1. On my file servers I am using samba-3.0.10-1.4. I'm not sure exactly what is happening but every couple of weeks the file servers disappear form network neighborhood. I checked browstat on my Windows system and it points to my PDC as the master browser and I checked the wins.dat file on my PDC and the systems were there. I did not check the browse.dat file before correcting this latest problem (by restarting the nmbd service on the systems in question). Is there a relations...

How do I force a browser election?
I can force a browser election with the Win98 command: net view /workgroup:workgroupname However, that does not work on NT (and I haven't tried it on W95). What I'd really like is a command from the Linux command line to force the election. I've looked everywhere and can't find it. For my purposes having preferred master=yes and restarting Samba is not an option. Does anyone

Samba Server Icon diseppearing (PR#7846)
...t; > What I would like to determine is what is causing the icon to disappear, and > what can I do to keep it there permanantly. Bob, To debug browsing problems start by reading docs/BROWSING.txt to understand exactly how the browsing works. If you have NT machines on your network use the browstat command in the resource kit to show you what local master browser you have on the network. This should get you started on fixing the problem, Hope this helps, Jeremy Allison, Samba Team. -- -------------------------------------------------------- Buying an operating system without source is...

Domain master browser for multiple domains?
Hi, As I understand it, for cross-subnet browsing to work, we need a domain master for each workgroup/domain? This presents a problem since many of our workgroups/domains are just a collection of Windows 95 machines and so do not have a domain controller to be a domain master browser. Can we make Samba be a domain master browser for multiple domains/work- groups (the list of domains/workgroups

Mixed Network Diagnostics
Hi Folks, I emailed earlier about some samba / network issues we are having with in a mixed OS environment. I believe that our problem might be being caused by possible multiple Browse Masters in the windows machines. What I am trying to find is a good way to help determine this. I'm not a windows guru, and have not been able to find any browse master settings on the XP systems. I

Need Help Getting Windows XP To Use Samba Properly
...dows XP, however, generates the error "The network name is no longer available" when trying to browse to shares on the Solaris box. Browsing is what produces the error - otherwise, I can map to and access resources directly with "\\servername\share". Running the command "browstat status" on the WinXP box shows that the Windows machine is not able to pull the server list from the Solaris box. Again, Windows 2000, however, works fine and does not have this problem. Desperate for help to get this resolved.

SAMBA and Subnet Browsing
Hi, I have 3 Samba servers run Samba 2.0.7 on RH6.2, with Kernel 2.2.16-3. Everything seems to be OK, except that my Win9x clients cannot see other Win9x clients across the subnets. Each server has 2 n/w cards installed, with IP Forwading enabled etc. If the user knows the machine name, he can get access to the shared resources across all 3 subnets, but using the n/w neighbourhood browser, shows

...preciate it. I'm trying to keep it all straight, I'm relatively new to Samba (but learning quickly). What I now know: 1. Sniffer on XP box reveals that XP does see the broadcasts from Samba. 2. The Microsoft support tool/command "Browstat status" shows that XP does recognize Samba as the server (if Computer Browser service disabled, otherwise XP may/may not elect itself as the master - unpredictable), but also shows that XP is unable to pull down the browse list form the Samba box. This is the...
