Browsing across subnets - some more problems
...e clarification on some issues. I understand the
following things to be the case, please correct me if I am wrong:
- Machines on a subnet will periodically announce their existance by
broadcasting to everyone their identity
- Other machines will hear these broadcasts, and add the machines to
their browse lists.
- If one of the machines is a WINS server, that machine will keep note
of the broadcasting machine in it's WINS database, as well aqs add the
machine to it's browse list.
I am not getting the above, here are some questions / concerns:
- Why does nmbd appear to be running twice on s...

As far as Samba is concerned it uses both, DNS & NetBIOS, but instead of
using WINS, it uses DNS to find the machines and then 'nmbd' produces
the browsing list (this is how I understand it works)

Wins, browsing, browse.dat and wins.dat
Hi,
I have troubles understanding wins and network browsing functionnality.
I have a samba server(pdc) on a different subnet than my clients.
The server smb.conf has wins support = Yes, the client are configured to
use the wins server.
In the wins.dat, i can see all the computers.
In the browse.dat i have only computers/servers that are in the same subnet.
When i try to browse the network via "network neighborbood" i only see
the computers that are in the same subnet ( the same that are in the
browse.dat )
I've read the howto about wins, but can't understand how my c...

Delete dead browse lists
I've run into this problem a few times now and still haven't figured out how to fix it without shutting down my entire network.
We get a lot of guest and transient computers belonging to different workgroups.
The gleefully add themselves to the SAMBA domain master and the SAMBA master browse never gets rid of them.
Isn't there some sort of timeout or interface where these can be deleted?

more inter-subnet browsing wierdness
...e. The .1 subnet conists of win98 and winME boxes all
configured from DHCP to use the samba box for WINS lookups. The .9 subnet
consists of win2k boxes also all configured from DHCP to use the samba box for
WINS lookups.
All the machines on the .1 subnet see all the other .1 boxes and SAMBA in the
browse lists. Most of the machines in the .9 subnet see only the other
machines in .9 in the browse list. A few random machines in .9 (it seems to
happen randomly to machines) see the machines in .1 and SAMBA but no other
machines in .9 (not even themselves) in the browse list.
All machines are in the s...

Problem browsing shares "element not found"
Good afternoon,
I have a new Samba414 install on clean Ubuntu server 12.04. All working
except I cannot browse into shares. I get "not accessible" and then
"element not found". Using "net use" works fine - I can "browse" a share
that has been attached to a drive letter but I cannot browse the UNC
path. That is to say
NET USE P: \\MYDOMAIN\public
works, and browsin...

Is it possible to browse multiple workgroups on two or more subnets?
I have set up samba on either end of a VPN and can browse successfully from
either end, but only in the workgroup that samba is configured for. Can
Samba be a member of more than one workgroup at the same time? Looking in
browse.dat I can see all the m...
