odds ratios for n-way tables: seeking an *apply-able method
I'm looking for a way to generalize the calculation of (log) odds ratios for 2 x 2 x {strata} frequency tables in vcd::oddsratio() to R x C x {strata} tables. For an R x C table, F, odds ratios can be defined in several ways; one simple way, particularly for tables with ordered factors, is to calculate the set of continuation odds ratios, based on the (R-1)x(C-1) set of 2x2 tables with

Colours for sunflowerplot
Dear fellow R users, I would like to draw a "sunflowerplot" because I have data (decade by month) that plots multiple times on the same x-y co-ordinates. Further I would like to colour each of the points/sunflower leaves on the plot according to the group they belong to (i.e. which type of event each represents within that decade and month). I thought that this would be relatively

plyr: a*ply with functions that return matrices-- possible bug in aaply?
I have an application where I have a function to calculate results for a 2-way table or matrix, which returns a matrix with one less row and column. To keep this short, the function below captures the structure: fun2way <- function(f){ if (!length(dim(f)) ==2) stop("only for 2-way arrays") R <- dim(f)[1] C <- dim(f)[2] f[1:(R-1), 1:(C-1)] } Now, I want to

Problem with axes in a plot of Kaplan-Meier
Helo: After changing "involuntarily" some of the graphics parameters with the command par() (I did not know that changes with this command are permanent), now when I made a plot of the survival Kaplan-Meier function, the Y axis does not start at 1, and the X axis does starts at 0. The commands that I use are: library(survival) BROWN.SPV = Surv(BROWN$TEMPS, BROWN$DEF)

Brown-Forsythe test of equality of MEANS
Dear friends, two years ago (as I found on the web) Paul sent the following message but I was not able to find if he got an answer. Today I have the same question and it would be great if I could find out that this test has been implemented (somehow) in R. Please do not confuse it with the Brown-Forsythe test of equality of variances. Thank you: I've been searching around for a function for

Proper noun stemming
Hi All I was wondering if anyone had a solution for the following problem. I user QueryParser to stem my documents before adding them to a database. During the stemming process I would like to find a way of keeping proper nouns that span two or more words together as a phrase. For example "New York" or "Gordon Brown" or "Prime Minister" get spilt up. I see

Sorry to everyone on the list, but for some reason this is the only reliable way to get hold of John. John Brown of Chagres Technologies, please contact me! lm() gives different results to lm.ridge() and SPSS
Hi John, Thanks for the comment... but that appears to mean that SPSS has a big problem. I have always been told that to include an interaction term in a regression, the only way is to do the multiplication by hand. But then it seems to be impossible to stop SPSS from re-standardizing the variable that corresponds to the interaction term. Am I missing something? Is there a way to perform the

Busy message
When I dial a SIP phone which is specified in the sip.conf, but the phone is not connected, Asterisk gives the message "The user at Extension XXX is on the phone ...." Shouldn't the message be the unavailable message? Is there something wrong with my set up or is this a "bug" with Asterisk? Simon Brown

Fwd: Re: Encrypt /decrypta file with ssh keys.
As per Alex's suggestion, attached is the proof of concept "sfile" script. If there is anyone out there with great C skills who can recreate this functionality "out of the box", I think there would be a few happy campers (at least two, anyways). -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Re: Encrypt /decrypta file with ssh keys.
