Programmatically counting RSpec tests?
If I have an object `obj` that is a SpecTask, and subsequently invoke it, is there a way to programmatically determine the number of tests that were successful, failed, and pending as a result of running that SpecTask? -- John Feminella Principal Consultant, Distilled Brilliance

Design changes are done in Fedora
...nBox? Would the world really be a better place if CDE had never been replaced? Me, I?ll take GNOME 3 and all its warts over CDE any day of the week. CDE never would have *evolved* to be the equal of GNOME; it had to be destroyed to make room. Perl, Python, Ruby, C, C++, or Java? A whole lot of brilliance has gone into replacing FORTRAN, COBOL and Lisp, but is the current zoo of high-level languages a net improvement? As a programmer, I think so, but I?ll bet we can find someone who will say that brilliance would have been better redirected to other pursuits, even if it meant continuing to program...

Is there a way to version the contents of a table as a set?
I am looking at using acts_as_versioned to manage revisions of data in several tables in my application. However, the default behavior of acts_as_versioned appears to apply to individual rows within a table. The tables I want to version are complicated lookup tables and what I really want is to version the entire contents of each table as a single set. Adding a row, deleting a row, or updating

IRC spam
...a real person that spams a load of information into a channel about their understanding of how hardware works. I have no idea what their goal is for spamming this information, could be some desire for acceptance from perceived smartness. Or something as simple as wanting to be hired for their "brilliance". Hard to tell. A major issue with their personality is that they will retaliate against anyone that tries to stop their ranting, and they become hostile with their phrasing very quickly because of it. Just check the logs for them retaliating against anyone that has kickbanned them. Another i...

[LLVMdev] InstMetrics would look a lot like NoTTI
...al point of view. If anything, I think it is absolutely critical to differentiate the very interface this exposes from the TTI interfaces. The latter should be cost functions, that are as accurate as we can make them while remaining largely "conservative" (IE, don't assume any clever brilliance is the chip or backend; what is the impact of this in both the time and space dimensions? And with a distinct emphasis on the space dimension). What you're describing is something with a very different motivation and design constraints. Separating it thoroughly API-wise is going to be importa...

[LLVMdev] InstMetrics would look a lot like NoTTI
I want to expose most of the logic in NoTTI to passes that do not depend on TTI for the purpose of pure IR-level instruction metrics. For example, we don't want the presence of certain "free" intrinsics to affect the patterns handled by canonical transforms. It would still be ok to use DataLayout here, so certain casts are considered free. The idea of "free" here has little

ADODB and SQLServer

I tossed in some custom error messages stuff, so I could get the client to send me mail when it broke, and this is the error I''m getting: Unknown OLE Server: `ADODB.Connection'' HRESULT error code: 0x800401f3 Invalid class string Any brilliance into what would cause that... randomly? I''m going to have to recode my whole app using something other than rails in my `spare'' time, if I can''t solve this issue :| Thanks, -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

return(); was Suggestions for "good teaching" packages
...nly part of what I wanted. Perhaps its just my thinking style, but I agree with some others who suggest that it's not such a bad idea to be explicit about what one is doing. I prefer pedestrian code that I can understand easily and quickly fix/modify rather than highly optimized and uncommented brilliance that I cannot reuse. Given the overhead of return(), I'll likely switch to ans # return(ans) to make my programs clear, especially to non-R folk migrating in. I have also been writing optimization functions. Modularizing might be a nice student exercise, as well as avoiding early return...

Odd failure of smbd to start from init.d - CentOS 5.4 - it's that fine SELinux
...it are worse. There are standards for logging. Selinux is > ignoring > them. If it's going to be breaking stuff by default, and failing to > log the > breakage by default, that's not remotely good. Yet that's how CentOS > installs it. Are we downstream of some Redhat brilliance here? Selinux alerts are in /var/log/audit/audit.log The problem is if smbd doesn't create the messages.tdb file then it won't have the selinux rights. That file can be deleted and will be recreated on smbd start, it's just a cache file. -Ross
