PXELINUX v. bpbatch
What is the difference between PXELINUX and bpbatch ?
AFAICT, bpbatch doe not require a TFTP server which supports the
'tsize' option. So in the absence of such a server, I may need to
explore bpbatch... It seems that bpbatch can be used to remotely boot
DOS. Can PXELINUX also do this?

Bootloader chaining
I've been trying to make up for a mismatch in functionality between bpbatch
and pxelinux by trying to use both depending what I'm trying to do by chain
booting the two. I'm able to chain boot in either direction, either
pxelinux then bpbatch or bpbatch then pxelinux, but once I've done this,
and boot either Linux or DOS, I find the adapter I used to network bo...

Disk preparation
I'm trying to move off of bpbatch and on to pxelinux (bpbatch doesn't boot
the installation kernels for SuSE 8.1 and SLES 8--they appear to be too
big). This has been a pretty easy transition, except for the fact that I'm
using bpbatch to install Windows 2000 over the network as well as Linux.
For Windows 2000 I use a DOS...

Memdisk and USB Floppy
...architecture of the hardware
that I'm working with utilizes a single USB floppy that is shared across
multiple machines and there is no way to add a normal floppy. So to use
memdisk right now, I have to boot the floppy image over the network
serially, rather than in parallel.
I had been using bpbatch without this problem on these systems, but I'm
trying to move off of it (it won't boot the installation kernel from the
SuSE 8.1 CDs). Of course, I know bpbatch is not open-source, so
figuring out how it does things is probably difficult at best.
Thanks,

Hard disk image to use with Memdisk
Hallo
I would like to have an image of about 8Mb to boot with ISOLINUX and
MEMDISK. I am not able to create an image complete of the MBR, as MEMDISK
requires. I think I should emulate an 8Mb disk in memory or on a file, but I
am able to do so only for a 'single partition'. Could you please suggest me
a way to obtain the image? I can use Linux or Windows tools, it does not
matter.

Problem with syslinux booting via network in floppy image
...py (which can
also be burned to a CD using El Torito in floppy-emulation
mode), is known to work with PXELINUX 2.03 or later only
I'm using the free client from 3com, that looks exactly the
same as Argon Technology's client. All the PC clients are
PXE clients.
Firstly I want to say, using bpbatch to boot and load the
syslinux image works 100%, but I was forced to use the 3com
setup to load other ms dos images (to use the universal
ndis pxe dos driver). Now the problem using the
Argon/3com boot menu, is that it stops at the screen:
Could not find ramdisk image: initrd.gz
I would guess that...

Thanks a lot for pxelinux + memdisk
...tude for the recent versions of pxelinux
and memdisk. They allowed me not only to install Linux, but also to boot
those darn rescue Floppys on my IBM ThinkPad X22, which comes without
Floppy or CDDROM drive, but a built-in Ethernet card which supports PXE.
I also had a look at other projects, like bpbatch, but none were so easy
to use and functional as pxelinux.
Thanks a lot!

Hi
Is there a possibility to run diskless PCs under Windows 98 or
Windows ME with all the files located on a samba server ?
TIA

network. I did read somewhere on the web (several years ago) of a guy
who managed to boot windows from the net.
With the start of Win 98/ME/ etc.etc it's not posible anymore.
I currently use PXE to install machine from the net using bpbatch that
works great only bpbatch is not really under developnt and the script
language is a bit buggy.
I see only one option to boot windows from the net and that's using
win4lin (works great and fast but I don't use it at the office) or other
windows 'simulator'. Don't ask MS how...

...search of the web led me to lots of ways to boot Linux

2 (free) possibilities I can think of:
1. PXE support in the grub boot loader at ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/grub/
2. BPBatch from http://www.bpbatch.org
Cheers,
Martin
