SYSLINUX bootsplash
Hello all,
Forgive me if this has been asked before, I've been googling for two
days now and the only thing that I've learned is that bootsplash is a
total black art.
I'm booting off of a USB stick and I've finally gotten a splash screen
to appear before vmlinuz and initrd load, but once they load the splash
screen scrolls off the screen. Is there any way to make it behave and
stay there until X starts to load? Is there an altern...

bootsplash in initramfs and isolinux
Howdy,
I use isolinux very successfully to boot a CD on which I have a kernel
with an initramfs compiled in that holds the bootsplash as well as an
external initrd with a boot script. the CD boots fine and everything
works the way it should.
My problem is actually when I try to boot the same kernel and initrd
from the HD of a machine (easy way to boot the CD without altering the
BIOS). For some reason, the kernel fails to load...

bootsplash: splash=silent always boots as splash=verbose
Hi there,
I am trying to migrate from using syslinux with the gfxboot patch to using vesamenu.c32 which is a much simpler solution for my needs. The only problem I am having is that when I attempt to use the "splash=silent" kernel parameter it always boots as though I had entered "splash=verbose". By which I mean that the vga mode is correct, and the verbose graphics are

.spl files
...I
apologize if this is the wrong spot...The reason I posted here is that
I recall running across a syslinux changlog that said "..added support
for reading .spl..." files. I want to customize the suse boot up
splash screens (for a CD install). I have been attacking it from the
gfxboot and bootsplash side of things...but I believe that the
[resolution].spl files they supply are one of my final links...I have
searched and searched but can not seem to find any docs about
using/creating these archives(?)...so, any advice would be greatly
appreciated!
thanks

simulate PXE boot from Etherboot ROM?
Hi,
is there any way to simulate a PXE boot from an Etherboot ROM? Background:
I am using PXES in a customer project. PXES supports bootsplash only via
pxelinux. The customer machines only have old ISA network cards for which
there appears to be no PXE boot rom so I have to use Etherboot.
Maybe one could build an NBI image from pxelinux.0 somehow ??? Use a newer
etherboot image as a second stage loader?
N.B.: nbgrub only supplies boot...

isolinux problem: recent kernel versions vs. old hardware
Hi,
recent isolinux versions work fine with current linux kernels on
current hardware. But on older hardware there isn't a bootsplash
visible at all - like if there isn't a CD in the tray. :(
Sadly the older isolinux versions don't work with current kernels
(giving me an empty /proc/cmdline for example when using kernel
2.6.23), otherwise I'd just use an old isolinux version of course.
I tested several isolinux vers...

Network stops responding after some time
Hi there,
I''m using the Suse Enterprise 10 RC2 along with Xen 3.0.2 on X86-64 and I''m experiencing a problem with the network.
I boot into the Xen kernel and everything works just fine. I can browse the net etc.
However after a while the network stops responding completely. I am not sure what causes this to happen or what triggers it. After a few hours, the network just stops

boot kernel via function key
Hello,
I setup pxelinux, a bootsplash and a help screen (F1). Now i would like that
F2 boots the default kernel. It is possible to assign F2 to boot a kernel? I
did not found this topic in the syslinux.doc.
How cann i tell pmmtolss16 to assign i to a specific color? I tried something
like:

vesamenu.c32 retain image
...ap graphic is retained
when control is passed to the loaded kernel image; i.e., the screen is
not blanked to alphanumeric mode before starting the kernel.
Is it possible for vesamenu.c32 (or syslinux in general) to support
similar functionality?
This would be very handy replacement of all the
bootsplash/gensplash/whatever kernel patches.
Thank you very much for consideration!

USB bootable (using syslinux)
...a DOS bootstrap (like the one you obtain when you format a device using /s option under DOS).
The pendrive includes io.sys, command.com, autoexec.bat, config.sys, program1.exe, program2.exe
My question is:
Can I use syslinux to accomplish the same thing? How??
It would be nice to have a background bootsplash logo of the company, while the user selects one of the two boot options, using the cursor keys.
Just like GRUB...
Notes:
I'm using suse linux (no MS Windows installed).
The pendrive has 1GB (FAT32 formatted).
I'm using a laptop (and I don't have floppy drives).
Thank you.

[DOC] Update item on FAQ
It''s not quite clear how to go about this so hopefully whoever maintains
the FAQ is on this list.
As part of closing bug #156, it would be nice to add a sentence on item

following sentences:
"Some distros (notably SLES9) have a mkinitrd that adds garbage to the
end of the initrd. These initrds will not work

I think we should change this and _not_ vmap on buffer creation.
Eventually we'll get bootsplash and console clients and they will also
have to deal with these low memory devices. AFAICS the only client that
will need a virtual address at all times is the fbdev client when it
doesn't use a shadow buffer.
