How does 'require Class' differ from 'include' ?
Hi all,
Prompted by Evan''s question about requiring classes between modules; I
wonder if someone could clarify my understanding of how this works: If
I have
Class a {
some_resource{x:}
some_resource{y:}
}
Class b {
some_resource{z:
require Class[a]
}
}
Does this mean that puppet will ensure that some_resource{x:} and
some_resource{y:} have been successfully applied before it tries

centos 5.2 install: mbr or no bootloader ?
I recently used a purchased centos 5.2 dvd to install.
It all went smoothly, and I am up and running
automagically it seems to have upgraded itself to 5.3 Final
One peculiarity:
I believe I was given the choice of:
--installing the bootloader into mbr
or
--no bootloader install
I did not want my mbr overwritten, so I chose no bootloader
Why is there no choice of 1st sector of root partition?

slow to drill into directories
I have a samba server configured at a clients office and sometimes when
he is drilling down into directories in his "File Explorer" it stalls. I
tail'ed the log files and I ran tcpdump, but I can't see anything that
stands out. What should I look at? I am running Samba Version 2.2.3a-12.3
for Debian.

Puppet File checksums directories
I''m not sure if this is the way things are supposed to happen but, when I
specify a directory with recursion and md5 checksums, the directory itself
is checksummed and assumed to have changed.
Of course, if anything in the directory changed, the directory checksum will
change.
What I would like to do is to manipulate all of the files in a directory,
but ignore the directory itself.

Frustrating warning/error from puppetd
Greetings all,
(Hopefully this won''t be a HTML mail.)
I''ve picked up puppet as a tool to manage a fairly small network of RHEL servers, and I''m really liking what I see so far. However, I''m having a pile of trouble with a class definition for a yum controller:
# $Id$
class yum-rhel5 {
file { "/etc/yum.conf":
mode => 644,

Report usage...
Hi,
I''ve setup my systems to do reporting as explained in https://
reductivelabs.com/cgi-bin/puppet.cgi/wiki/ReportsAndReporting, with
tagmail defined as one of the report types - but I do not recieve any
mail at all.
I''ve configured a tagmail.conf file like this:
all: root@localhost
But the documentation mentions three options, namely sendmail,
reportfrom,

Module Organization
This is in reference to David Schmitt''s writeup [1]
I like that writeup a lot; I just had a few comments/clarifications:
* Namespaces: For now, we just use a flat namespace for modules, i.e.
you can''t have modules within modules, and you always know that in a
fully qualified name ''foo::bar::baz'' that ''foo'' is the module name and

''Considered Harmful'' Considered Harmful
Because here in Puppet-land we''re all about self-reference and
recursion, and because I actually have to give a talk at RubyConf
next weekend about abusing self-reference, and because parent nodes
aren''t considered harmful in my own world, I give you:

I think it manages to somehow be both on- and off-topic at the same
