install problem

Equivalent to Solaris Zones?

Sound device has been blown away
Well, I spoke to soon. After installing gstreamer-ffmpeg, and creating an .asoundrc file, I thought everything was perfect. All my music applications were handling MP3s, FireFox was playing sounds, everything was sweet. And so I played some music in Rhythmbox. That lasted about four or five songs, and then suddenly, the sound cut out. And at the same time, my keyboard became unresponsive. I

Is Java insecure ?
Hi Everyone I am considering learning Java. There have been well publicized Java security incidents recently that make me not want to learn it. However it's in Centos and I trust Centos, are the concerns in the media blown out of proportion ? -Patrick

Why would we not do a full-blown restore? With this patch, I think some configuration done during enumeration, e.g., ASPM and MPS, wi...

Berkeley DB with Dovecot
...told him I do not believe Dovecot supports that. I could not find any documentation relating to it. 1) Does Dovecot support Berkeley DB? 2) Are their any plans to incorporate that feature into Dovecot? It seems like it could potentially be a very useful feature. I have used it myself when a full blown MySQL configuration seemed like over-kill on other small projects. -- Jerry ? checkUsage from codetools shows errors when function uses functions from loaded packages
...s from other packages, I get this error: no visible global function definition for ?xxxxxxx? For example: test = function() { require(plotrix) color.legend() } library(codetools) checkUsage(test) Can I tell codetools somehow where to look for these functions without building a full blown package? Bug tracker
I started thinking that perhaps I should move my TODO list to a bug tracker. But because of reasons I've explained a few times before, I don't want a full blown public bug tracking system. The requirements for it are: * I am the only person who can add new bugs. Everyone else reports bugs/requests to this mailing list as before. (Well, I guess Stephan could use this as well if he wants to.) * Everyone can comment existing bugs. * Dovecot mailing list...

NetJet and RAS
Hi, Last weekend I was planning to buy a physical PBX system, but instead I have been blown away by the fact that VoIP really works, that Asterisk is so easy to set up and use... and free! We're in Australia, so as I understand it, we aren't allowed to use the Zaptel cards. We need to set up our system to route incoming 56K data calls to the PPP daemon on our Linux box or to o...

SYSLINUX current directory and the config file
...cluding* one loaded via the CONFIG directive. The obvious exception to this would be the initially loaded PXELINUX configuration file. If there are ideas how better to handle the PXELINUX case I would appreciate hearing them. Would this be sufficient for people, or would everyone prefer the full-blown solution? That would probably have to wait until post-3.50 just due to the invasiveness of some of the changes. -hpa

here at wkdu.org our minds are blown trying to figure out what our problem is, we are using a dell optiplex gx1 with a soundblaster live card. we are getting a nasty hum on the line in. the thing is we plug a cd player directly into the soundcard the hum goes away and when we plug the line in into anything else there is no hum, s...

Idmap backend for winbind
I'm trying to set up an Idmap Backend LDAP server for winbind. I don't need a full blown SAMBA PDC; just a server to provide the SID to UID/GID mappings. We're using a Windows Active Directory server to authenticate against but we want the above mappings to be the same across multiple samba machines. Can we just stand up a simple ldap server and just add the mappings and that'...

Advice on how to arrange fix of buglet
Recently I reported a small bug in optim's SANN method failing to report that it had exceeded the maximum function evaluation limit in the convergence code. This is a small enough matter that I was reluctant to create a full-blown bug report. Indeed in the optimx package Ravi Varadhan and I have been developing on r-forge (under the OptimizeR project) it was a minimal work around to fix the matter in our wrapper that incorporates optim() and a number of other tools. While I don't normally do C code, I could likely fi...

Asterisk and VOIP was Re: CentOS for non-tech user
...so probably not a big target because of the diversity of systems out there and relative limited utility one would have if such a system were compromised. That you tend to tend to think of it as an "appliance" running the phone system does not change the fact that it's actually a full-blown server OS with the same issues as other servers. But if you're not connected to the Internet none of of this means anything. CentOS/Asterisk *would* be an appliance under these conditions. There are no "server" vulnerabilities because you're not connected to a LAN. Apologies i...

In-string variable/symbol substitution: What formats/syntax is out there?
...quot;pi = 3.14159265358979, 2pi = 6.28318530717959" I'm sure there are other approaches - do you know of any in R? They don't have to support in-line calculations such as in the first two examples, but if they do, it's a bonus. I'm looking for simpler functions and not full blown literate programming methods (e.g. Sweave, noweb, knitr, brew, RSP, ...). It should also be *in-string* substitution out of the box, so sub(), sprintf() and friends does not count. Thanks Henrik PS. The following is on the borderline because it does not do automatic variable look up, but since...

IAX Inbound Sound Quality
I have a couple of DID's through VP Connect and have been having sound quality issues on incoming calls. During the call, the calling parties voice sometimes sound like it is crackling, in other words it is not very crisp. I would liken it to listening to a radio with a blown speaker. This sound defect comes and goes throughout the call. The other person is always audible but it just isn't as crisp and clear as when I make outgoing calls over IAX. The other party does not hear any audio defects. Anybody have any suggestions on tweaking this? Or has anyone experienc...

VS2005 Command Line interface
...nd customer has settled on Visual Studio 2005. I am able to build on my Mac with GNU tools for development and testing but deliverables must be built with VS2005. I am currently using VMWare Fusion but have moved to invoking DEVENV directly from the command line and no longer use or need the full blown IDE. I am looking for a way to get DEVENV from VS2005 to run under Wine (again the IDE IS NOT needed or wanted). Is there a way to do this? How do I set it up? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks,
