[librsync-devel] librsync and rsync vulnerability to maliciously crafted data. was Re: MD4 checksum_seed
.... Maybe it can vary > depending on only the input data... The problem is repeatability is what makes it vulnerable. If the content fully determines the signature, the content can be crafted to produce a particular signature. It is relatively easy to calculate two different blocks with the same blocksum if the checksum_seed is known. librsync could be modified to detect when two blocks had the same blocksum in a signature, and permutate the checksum seed in a deterministic way to try repeatedly until a signature without collisions is found. This would give repeatable signatures and protect agains...

[RFC] dynamic checksum size
Currently rsync has a bit of a problem with very large files. Dynamic block sizes were introduced to try handle that automatically if the user didn't specify a block size. Unfortunately that isn't enough and the block size would need to grow faster than the file. Besides, overly large block sizes mean large amounts of data need to be copied even for small changes. The maths indicate

rsync variation help
This message is for rsync developers who know the code very well. This is first time I am using rsync. In short trying to solve an problem by using existing rsync code. rsync does treewalk and it also does checksum on "logical file block", whose size can be choosen at will. I want to use this exisiting framework to write a utility to maintain a checksum tree of an dataset. Q. What do

rsync scalability [Virus checked]
...age-file (200 to 400 MB) to 500 locations, which are equal as concurrent users on the day X. what parameters do you suggest to use on the central rsync-server? any recommendation for socket options? is it a good idea to split the file into several pieces, let?s say 10 MB ? Does this speed up the blocksum calculation or is it better to leave the file in one piece? our rsync-server has 1 GB RAM - is this OK? bye , Stefan -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed

GZIP, ZIP, ISO, RPM files and rsync, tar, cpio
I noticed with rsync and compressed files or package files the transfer efficiency drops considerably. Eg. rsync an ISO image of a distribution will give you between 30% and 60% of the original transfer although from Beta1-Beta2 the change could not have been that great. The same thing happens with ZIP files for obvious reasons. My question or feature request if you want to call it is. Is it

blockwise sums
I am looking for a function like my.blockwisesum(vector, n) that computes sums of disjoint subsequences of length n from vector and can work with vector lengths that are not a multiple of n. It should give me for instance my.blockwisesum(1:10, 3) == c(6, 15, 24, 10) Is there a builtin function that can do this? One could do it by coercing the vector into a matrix of width n, and then use

Dirvish, --link-dest and permissions
(I'm not sending this to dirvish@pegasus because I think that this message applies more to rsync's --link-dest option than to just dirvish.) I recently noticed a huge spike in dirvish network usage and traced it to files whose permissions had been changed. (with rsync v2.5.6) I understand and agree that a --link-dest copy of a source file cannot be hardlinked to, but couldn't a

Copying EAs and ACLs
Hello, I am the guy behind the ext2/ext3 patches for Extended Attributes and ACLs, and I've recently been asked about ACL support in rsync by Eric. Upon investigating I found that you have an ACL patch against rsync-2.5.5 [1]. I also found some other postings to rsync@lists.samba.org concerning rsync and ACLs [3]. Are there any plans for finalizing an integrating that rsync ACL patch? I

Some C help patching sender.c (from:plain source -> encrypted destination: rsync + gpg)
Hi, I am exploring extending Kyle Jones' patch (which implements post-transfer filter in receiver.c) to pre-filter or otherwise pre-process the file before it is sent. Kyle Jones patch can be found here <http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=b6f55s%24256q%241%40FreeBSD.csie.NCTU.edu.tw&rnum=6> and the rationale for what I am trying to do here

Hello, For no apparent reason Rsync is uploading the whole file even though the the remote file is identical to the local file. Storage compression patch for Rsync (unfinished)
Hi, i am using Rsync for making backups of a MySQL database. The MySQL files can be compressed about 1:10 and i want to make use of this fact. Rsync currently doesn't support saving files in a compressed state. I personally think this should be a feature for the filesystem (in the sense of "synchronised files") but currently there is no such filesystem for Linux available.
