Off-Topic: Crime Statistics Don't Pay
WARNING: COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC -- Nothing to do with R. I thought readers of this list might enjoy the following. The link to the full article is at the bottom. I hope this is not "too" inappropriate. ------- Overconfidence in crime statistics doesn?t pay. In a new study, a team of criminologists makes the case that reported crime rates should acknowledge uncertainty in the data. The

prevent users from fiddling with network?
As Scott said, nothing is perfect. On Ubuntu (16.04 - the current long term support version) all home directories are world executable/readable ("Security? What's that?"). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Robbins" <scottro11 at gmail.com> To: "centos" <centos at centos.org> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2017 9:40:03 PM Subject: Re: [CentOS]

standardized/studentized residuals with loess
Hi all, I'm trying to apply loess regression to my data and then use the fitted model to get the *standardized/studentized residuals. I understood that for linear regression (lm) there are functions to do that:* * * fit1 = lm(y~x) stdres.fit1 = rstandard(fit1) studres.fit1 = rstudent(fit1) I was wondering if there is an equally simple way to get the standardized/studentized residuals for a

1 out of 5 wnt 4sp3 machines acts up
Ok, I'm stumped. I've got what appear to be 5 identical WNT workstation 4 sp3 machines. All have been configured to run off the primary domain controller (Samba 1.9.19). On one of these ONLY the domain logins generates a single popup window which says: Incorrect password or unknown username for \\machinename\C$ and presents them with a username/password dialog box. The users can

Slow eth0 Config
Folks, This is a strange problem, and I'm not sure this is the right place for it, so feel free point me to a better location. I'm running FC3 and Samba 3.0.14a. The problem is this: when I boot up my Linux box, and it gets to the point of turning on my NIC (eth0), where the PC used to turn it right on and continue, now there's an inordinately long delay in getting eth0 to

(kind of OT) Equivalent to onunload or onbeforeunload in Safari?
I realize this isn''t specifically a Rails question, but I figure others here will have encountered it. I have a client that wants form data to be saved when leaving a page. This could include leaving a page by following a link, closing a window, or pressing the back or forwards buttons. So ... I do some research, and found this Web page:

Why is Samba4 not recommended as a file server?
Since you bring up that topic (Samba4 not recommended as a file server), I've been meaning to ask on this list for a while: Why? I installed Samba4 2 years ago next month. I read then that recommendation in the wiki and took it literaly: not actual Samba shares. I followed the advice and we have two other different servers acting as actual "classic" Samba file servers. At the

feature request: use HOME before getpwnam() in misc.c
it's really^3 annoying that no matter the value of $HOME, that tilde_expand_filename() only looks at getpwnam() and friends instead of at least trying getenv("HOME"). What is the use case? HOME=longpath_to_config1 ssh -i ~/.ssh/key1 HOME=longpath_to_config2 ssh -i ~/.ssh/key2 but getpwnam() defeats this by always accessing what's in the passwd file. So .ssh/known_hosts is

Handling of factors
I'm rather confused by the semantics of factors. When applied to factors, some functions (whose results are elements of the original factor argument) return results of class factor, some return integer vectors, some return character vectors, some give errors. I understand some but not all of this. Consider: Preserve factors: `[`, `[[`, sort, unique, subset, head, tapply, rep, rev, by,

Seeking to granules in discontinuous streams
After some more thought on this, I'm trying to work out whether the back link offset needs precision. Semantically, the only need we have for this is to be able to seek back to a point before the start of the earliest event still active at the time of the original seek. As far as I know, and please correct me if I'm wrong, nothing in Ogg mandates that this backlink actually resolves to a

ANNOUNCE: cifs-utils release 6.6 ready for download
Time for a new cifs-utils release! The main change in this release is a set of cleanups to cifs.upcall to make it more efficient and work better with alternate style credcaches. No longer does it blithely stumble around in /tmp looking for credcaches. We now just use the default credcache that to which the krb5.conf points. Go forth and download!
