Power analysis in hierarchical models
Dear All
I am attempting some power analyses, based on simulated data.
My experimental set up is thus:
Bleach: main effect, three levels (control, med, high), Fixed.
Temp: main effect, two levels (cold, hot), Fixed.
Main effect interactions, six levels (fixed)
For each main-effect combination I have three replicates.
Within each replicate I can take varying numbers of measurements

Help with nonlinear regressional
Dear All,
I am doing experiments in live plant tissue using a laser confocal
microscope. The method is called "fluorescence recovery after
photo-bleaching" (FRAP) and here follows a short summary:
1. Record/ measure fluorescence intensity in a defined, round region of
interest (ROI, in this case a small spot) to determine the initial intensity
value before the bleaching. This pre-bleach value is also used for
normalising the curve (pre-blea...

[PATCH] Start the server if another user has a PID matching our stale pidfile.
If unicorn doesn''t get terminated cleanly (for example if the machine
has its power interrupted) and the pid in the pidfile gets used by
another process, the current unicorn code will exit and not start a
server. This tiny patch fixes that behaviour.

I unscrew the casing, extract the disk platter(s), slide a very strong
magnet over both sides of the platter surface then bend the platter in
half.
How secure is that ?
I can't afford a machine that

I often find harddrives with several 10 mm drill-holes in them, in the
electronics disposal room at work.
I'd say that'd be enough as well. 8-)

smbclient to access limited networks?
...host in the INTRANET.
Looking into the Linux kernel message log, I found smbclient is
broadcasting NetBIOS name service queries to not only the INTRANET side
but also the INTERNET side.
I want to disable the queries to the INTERNET side because it could get
forged responses and lead to a security bleach. I checked the "hosts
allowed" field in smb.conf, but it seems to work only to limit accesses
to a Samba server--not to limit anything with smbclient.
I'll appreciate any suggestion.
TIA.

facter lsb* on Fedora
I just realized that if you don''t have redhat-lsb on your (Fedora 7)
box, all those lsb* facts don''t show up. Should I make redhat-lsb a
requirement for the facter rpm to guard against that ?

Persp and color
How can I control de "wrap-around" color behaviour in the persp
function ?
I am using something like :
persp(bb[1:100,2:97], col= rainbow(8,start=0.1, end=0.8)))
Depending on the rainbow length value I get several "wrap-around" blocks of
the selected color range...something that I wanted to avoid...
My idea is to use the color in order to make a separation from a

validates_format_of :url, regexp?
Hey,
Does anybody have a regexp for validating URLs? I found this one and am
trying to adapt it:

Enhanced heatmap, barplot functions
...of fold-change heatmaps. The
specification of 'breaks' allows for the mapping of colors to ranges to be
made symmetric around +-1, for the space between +-1 to be 'collapsed' into
a single color, and for extreme values to be 'collapsed' into a single color
block instead of bleaching out all of the lower values. In this context, a
color key becomes invaluable, and if the plotted data is the result of model
fitting, one wants to add p-value flags, and to select a meaningful column
order instead of depending on the dendrogram or the original matrix order.

select(): Interrupted system call from curb when stopping unicorn
Hi,
We''ve just migrated one of our rails applications from nginx/passenger
running on REE 1.8.7 Ubuntu 8.04 to unicorn running on MRI 1.9.3 on
Ubuntu 10.04. The app makes a number of calls to internal services
using curb.
Our deployment script stops unicorn by sending SIGQUIT to the unicorn
master, sleeps for a few seconds to ensure that HAProxy has taken the
node out of service and
