Trying to make tidy{} work
Hi, Say I''ve got a directory full of stale Tomcat temp files of the form: /usr/local/blackboard/apps/tomcat/work/Catalina/localhost/webapps_assessment/strts6866.tmp and I want to delete any files that haven''t changed in a week and not keep any backup. Should this get rid of them: tidy { "/usr/local/blackboard/apps/tomcat/work/Catalina/localhost/webapps_assessment":...

[Bug 2375] Support (a la Gnu tar) for --directory DIR
...the starting dir outside the relative transfer if you use the --files-from command, if we assume that your example command had put the "usr" into the "cd /usr" instead of in the source path (just to make this a non-root example), this command would do what you want: echo local/blackboard | rsync -az --files-from=- /usr rsync://host/dest/ Yeah, that's pretty convoluted, but it works. It's mainly useful for pulling files from a remote rsync where it is harder (or impossible) to set the base dir of the transfer using cd. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.samba.org/use...

Need tip on an inexpensive printer for college student using CentOS 5.5
...his iPod and SW that sometimes issued by a professor for a specific course...otherwise he uses CentOS for everything else. That setup worked well last year, except for printing. He has a low-end Cannon printer that is not supported in the Linux realm. Most of his coursework was uploaded to "Blackboard" and rarely did he have to print anything. On the rare occasion when he had to print a paper/briefing, his work-around was to build the paper/briefing in OO, save in Office 2003 format on a USB drive, boot to Win7, load in MS Office and print to the Cannon printer. I'm looking to clean th...

R question type in Moodle
Moodle (www.moodle.org) is an open source course management system, a competitor to Blackboard. I am writing several hundred R questions that will be used within the quiz module in Moodle. Unfortunately, Moodle does not have a built in question type for R. You can read about the different questions types in Moodle here: http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&perpage=40&search=Ques...

The use of R Commander for beginning students and newbies
...so that we can start them out with some immediately successful outcomes. Then, with experience we can move them over to the use of R syntax, which is certainly far more robust. For beginning students, newbies, and any others who may be interested, I've opened for guest access an Elluminate-Blackboard video on the use of R Commander. The URL follows and a password is not required: https://mako.nova.edu/webapps/bb-collaborate-bb_bb60/guest.recording.launch. event?uid=476978d4-00c4-488e-98a3-495201e17f5f The full video is about 1 hour and 20 minutes. error in passing an argument to do.call when do.call is in a for statement
Dear R-users, I am having a problem with passing an argument to a function in a do.call function which itself is in a for statement. I am building a function to upload question pools to the blackboard learning environment. This function which transforms questions to XML style output should be generic and allow for any function to generate questions. Therefore I use do.call in this function. However, because I make multiple versions of a single type of item I use a for statement. Now, when specif...

Modification-proposal for %% (modulo) when supplied with double
...thmetic being broken. However, I agree with you that we should not adopt his proposal. It would not make things more "user friendly" for people. Everyone has a different application and a different use of %% and they just need to keep in mind that they are talking to a computer and not a blackboard. Here is an example of a feature that was meant to help users get more intuitive results with floating point numbers, but which actually caused headaches instead: https://github.com/Rdatatable/data.table/issues/1642 It is a slightly different scenario to this one, but I think it is still a good exa...

Rails and background tasks/threads
I am just getting into web servers/web applications and rails as well so bear with me. I am trying to write a web app that, based on a users input from the browser, will perform some task, and update the browser (ala ajax style) as needed and/or provide a way for the user to control the background task. Now, I have more experience with java servlets, which makes this easy enough for a beginner.

Integrating R-programs into larger systems
Hi experts! Have anybody experience in including an R-program as part of a larger system? In Matlab there is a toolbox that converts a m-script into C-code. One application in mind is that I do the model building in R, for estimating the risk for cancer based on clinical measurements. When the model is ready, a small R-program can simulate the model to estimate the risk for a new patient. The
