BIND9_DLZ with Ubuntu 20.04
On Ubuntu 20.04 I have provisioned a AD DC using samba-4.12 from Louis' Repo and his instructions: https://github.com/thctlo/samba4/blob/master/full-howto-Ubuntu18.04-samba-AD_DC.txt In the output of: samba-tool domain provision --use-rfc2307 --realm=XXX.XXX --domain=XXX --dns-backend=BIND9_DLZ --adminpass=XXXxxx I see this: WARNING /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/samba/provision/sambadns.py #978: BIND version unknown, please modify /var/lib/samba/bind-dns/named.conf manually. named -v returns: BIND 9.16.1 Ubuntu (stable release) There is no file /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/bind9/dl...

Samba DC and DNS best practices
Hello everyone, I'm trying to come up with the ideal DNS server configuration in consideration with Samba AD DC. The Samba wiki [1] says: > For high traffic environments, it is not recommended to use BIND9_DLZ-backed samba as a primary DNS server. Instead, use an external server that only forwards queries to BIND9_DLZ-backed samba DNS installations when the query is addressed to a zone managed by that node. Obviously running BIND9_DLZ is more complex than leveraging Samba's built-in DNS server. Why...

Problems with Internal DNS Samba 4
Hi, >No, you shouldn't have to, have you followed this first: I followed, but there are instructions in this tutorial to configure Bind9_DLZ first, as below: - Set up and configure the BIND9_DLZ back end. For details, see BIND9_DLZ Back End <https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/BIND9_DLZ_DNS_Back_End>. > What version of Samba is this ? Question about domain name with BIND9_DLZ
Hi, first of all i'm sorry for my english. I'm doing some tests to migrate a Samba3 domain to Samba4 with BIND9_DLZ, but the Domain name in Windows information is not correct. Is not a problem because all works as expected, but i wan't to know if i'm doing something wrong that can cause problems in future. I've done the tests with this command: samba-tool domain provision --use-rfc2307 --realm=home...

Samba 4.x to 4.9 upgrade and bind DLZ dns.
Hai Guys, Just a general notification. Currently if you run samba 4.x-4.8 and upgraded to 4.9.0-4.9.4 on bind9 dns. Your missing the new folders. So even when your already running on bind9_dlz, follow these steps, and prevent possible problems in future. # create the missing folder. mkdir -p /var/lib/samba/bind-dns/dns # use samba_upgradedns to move the files and folder and fixes rights. samba_upgradedns --dns-backend=BIND9_DLZ ... Yes, even if you already run bind9_dlz. # Change...

Bind9_DLZ DNS updating
...a network of about 200 pc's) ?not allowing logins until reboot. Nailing down some best practises in an attempt to fix. My best guess is that it's a Kerberos issue --sensitive to time sync and DNS. -- Installed chrony instead of ntpsec (seems to perform as advertised) -- (Today) moved to BIND9_DLZ instead of SAMBA_INTERNAL for dns services. (long ago I switched to SAMBA _INTERNAL from BIND9_DLZ because the Debian version of named did not include dlopen and had to be recompiled every time)? So now the windows eventlog complains that it can't update RR's because of a system error inst...

Is possible use BIND9 as DNS Back End on a new Samba DC?
...using Samba Internal DNS server? I know that is a trivial question for someone, but I've followed steps described on wiki's topic "Joining a Samba DC to an Existing Active Directory" and in "Preparing the Host for Joining the Domain" section is said I must finish "BIND9_DLZ DNS Back End" before I start the Samba DC service. In "BIND9_DLZ DNS Back End", more precisely in "Configuring the BIND9_DLZ Module" section, it is said to edit /usr/local/samba/bind-dns/named.conf. My issue is the /usr/local/samba/bind-dns/named.conf there isn't and t...

Problems with Internal DNS Samba 4
Hi, I have updated my DC's to Samba 4.10.7, but I still can't add a new DC to the domain. I believe the problem is with Samba Internal DNS. So I would like to convert my DNS from Internal DNS to Bind9_DLZ of the production DC's. Then I will join a new DC to the domain to see if it works. I checked the tutorials: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_a_BIND_DNS_Server https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Changing_the_DNS_Back_End_of_a_Samba_AD_DC But I found it a little complicated. Bind_DLZ and two AD DC
...o DC's and shortly after getting things going the second DC created a hardware failure issue and I just continued life with one DC. Now, while upgrading I am returning to two DC's. In a normal Bind9 "master and slave" setup the master always "feeds" the slave. With Bind9_DLZ setup (recommended to be used with Samba4) there is no "master and slave" setup. This "master and slave" configuration is NOT recommended for use in our (Samba4) situations and/or a Bind9_DLZ configuration. How does Bind9_DLZ "keep up" with each other (in a two AD DC...

Internal DNS migrate to Bind9_DLZ
...use bind_DLZ. I suggest, you try it. Im Just thinking about this, if your . (root) zone is loaded, and its trying to lookup you company.corp domain. It hits resolv.conf then you bind, and bind_dlz is not loaded yet, so lookup on the internet. Its a possible option this happens, i dont know the bind9_dlz code. And this, >> domain.corp is just an alias, not the actual domain name. Setup a with a real zone. But pretty im sure your problem is caused by one of these 2. I suguest start with making sure your localhost and root zones are loaded last on named.conf. In my Debian server the or...
