Restoring data from disk w/ messed up partition tables
I had the electricity go out the other day. When my Centos 4.3 workstation came up, I said yes when it got to the prompt "Unclean shutdown, force filesystem check?" prompt.
It ground away for awhile and then said something about a bad superblock. Yikes! I thought, that's a bad sign.
After a reboot, I got nothing but a grub> prompt.
I tried booting into rescue mode using the

Backup FAQ: PLEEZE include in FAQ?
I know there are a million ways to skin a cat, but we must have
1,000,001 discussed in the archives already. I guess folks don't know
about "search".
So, I'm hoping that the pending FAQ might have mention of one or more of
the *excellent* threads resident in the archives regarding backup?
And just so this post is not a total waste, I'll mention that cpio can

Why i dont see it in centos 4.2?
Thanks in advance.

RPM: any better way to reinstall only certain files?
My former primary boot disk had some bad spots appear awhile back.
Damage, per rpm --verify, seems to be predominately in loss of reference
files in /usr/share/doc and such as that.
Being the type that wastes my own time before wasting that of others, I
did a semi-careful perusal of the rpm man pages. Thought the --files or
some such might offer a way ought. IIUC, nope! Seems that I can't

Xen with Centos 4.3 - pointers?
Howdy,
I'd like to play with Xen on top of a Centos 4.3 installation. I've been
googling, but haven't found a nice comprehensive set of notes to get me
started. I've looked at the XenSource site, a wiki site that tells you
how to get CentOS working in a Xen shell (or whatever it's called).
So, for a Xen newbie, does anyone have have any pointeds to notes,
documentation,

Security: should I be concerned?
Two things have been weighing on my mind regarding security issues.
The first is that when I downloaded the CentOS 4.1 ISO images, I could
not get the sums to match even using different downloads from different
mirrors. I decided that that I was doing something wrong and decided to
trust the images. So far no regrets. But I am concerned that I get it
right the next time. I thought I had read

Detecting second network interface
Me again.
The ASUS P5N32-SLI motherboard in my new machine has dual NICs but
CentOS has only detected one of them. I've tried rebooting with the
network plugged in only to the second one, but kudzu still doesn't
find it.
Any suggestions?

Lame update from Dag's repo fails for me, any help?
Trying yum update for the latest announcements. Part of the problem I
experienced last week appears again: lame library DSA key is
unavailable. I had tried to resolve this last week, to no avail. Tried
again this week and found a French site with the key ID, but for libmad.
Anyone can give me the proper instructions so this works?
TIA
Bill

Reducing the deleterious effects of ego related issues on the list: growing up individually.
Folks,
I *suggest* that little or no reply to this is warranted. It's just the
statements of an old fart trying to make a (slightly) better environment
for all of us. These thoughts are offered for consideration and use as
you see fit. For some, "Hey, that'll work for me too" is the hoped for
result. No discussion is intended or warranted, IMO.

ssh session output stalls
Hello,
Is anyone else having problems with the ssh session output stalling
when ssh'd to another system and the command is running via sudo and a
pager is being used (e.g., more)?
Too highly reproducible :( to date, all known occurrences have
involved Centos 4.3 servers; makes no difference whether client is
RHEL WS 4.3, Centos 4.3 or FC 5 or WinDoze. Makes no difference if

If Trying to Recover a Damaged Partition: kbs-CentOS-Extras Has a Tool
Recently (and for ages, I'm sure) folks have suffered partition
destruction and had to try and recover. In the recent thread, the victim
eventually had to resort to Google and fond some package that I can not
remember now.
Well, I was perusing my YumInfo.lst.05, for general info, and I
discovered this (potential) little gem. Thought I would pass it on and
make it "more googleable"

CentOS 4.3 occasionally locking up accessing IDE drive
For those who haven't seen my several previous postings about problems
with this (now not quite so) new PC, I have an ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe
motherboard. The boot drive and primary filesystems are on an SATA
disk and I'm having no problem with that. However, I recently plugged
in a couple of IDE drives salvaged from my old PCs and I'm running
into trouble with one of those.

LVM Input/output error
Hi,
I recently installed centos for the first time and I like it!
Also, I just started working with lvm. The following warnings
are genertated whenever I run one of lvm commands on the external
usb disk (MyBook by Western Digital).
* What could be the source for those messages?
* Should I worry about them (writing into the created LV's
seems to work)?
* If yes, how to fix them?

RHN Up2date Cruft: can I dump it?
Got part 1 - xx of back up working, so figured it's a good time to look
for stuff to jettison... casually of course. Like paperwork,
documentation, ... it's low on the priority list with GB so cheap these
days.
Anyway, 42M in /var/spool/up2date. Headers and such. I use only yum
after my first month or so of CentOS. Can I dump that and similar non-
config stuff?
Or does it have some

Installed today, light use in and out. All looks normal ATM. CentOS 4.3
current (but 1 kernel version to install as of today). AMD Athlon 2200XP
using i686 versions.
I'm not a heavy user of it.

Waiting to see if I like it better than Evolution or not. Unfortunately,
the more it looks like MS Windows product, the less attractive I find
it.

Trying to find packages that depend on package X.
Quick search in bout "man yum" and "man rpm" shows how to find what
package X depends upon, but not what depends upon package X. Of course,
we could get a deplist for everything but I'm *guessing* that take more
overhead and grep too.
"yum remove" tells us. Then we just have to remember to say "No, don't
remove". Am I missing something... like I
