Stepwise regression
I am using stepAIC for stepwise regression modeling.
Is there a way to change the entry and exit alpha levels for the
stepwise regression using stepAIC ?
Many thanks,
Berthold

accessing information in data.frame
...I am struggling how to access the data itself, as e.g. sum(a[i]) does
not work in this context. In addition I need to know the name of the
variable within the function in order to generate a meaningful output,
and have not found any way to obtain the name of the variable.
Thanks for your input,
Berthold

Maps: Country coding
Hello,
I am using the maps library for plotting maps.
To build new geograhical sets such as Europe I use
europe = c('Germany','Netherlands',...)
Is there a list of county codes used by the map function.
Thanks,
Berthold

Spatial Statistics: surf.gls
....gls (Kriging) algorithm produces an error under this circumstance when performing the Choleski decomposition.
A workaround is to dither the grid coordinates using (x <- rnorm(length(x)) ; y<- rnowm(length(y))).
Question: Is this an expected behaviour of the surf.gls function ?

Berthold

PXE booting Dell diagnostics
...efault entry after a timeout.
My suspicion is that I have to modify the image somehow, because I can
boot a DOS disk image and other tools (memdisk, ...) without a problem.
But I haven't found a clue in the mailinglist archive until now.
I'm using syslinux-3.31 from kernel.org.

step function for glm()
Hi,
is there a possibility using the step() function together with a glm()
model, to force keeping some of the covariates in the model ?? and not
having them dropped ??
Thanks,

R is compiled using the
"-fPIC -O3 -fstrict-aliasing -ffast-math -funroll-loops -mpentiumpro -march=pentiumpro -fschedule-insns2"
compiler switches. I used
./configure --with-g77 --enable-blas_risc --enable-readline --with-x
for configuring.

Real sh? Or other efficient shell for non-interactive scripts
...download ?od?, I reply that I already have a functioning version of od, thank you very much. :)
Bsh is mainly in schily tools to show people how the first shell with an
interactive editable history did look like. Bsh != Bourne Shell.
It was named bsh because I implemented my history editor at H. Berthold AG
while working on a depanded page variant of UNOS.

R-1.0.0 is released
I've rolled up R-1.0.0.tgz a short while ago.
You can get it from
ftp://cvs.r-project.org/pub/CRAN/src/base/R-1.0.0.tgz
or
http://cvs.r-project.org/pub/CRAN/src/base/R-1.0.0.tgz
or wait for it to be mirrored at a CRAN site near you within a day or
two. It should get to the CRAN master site within a few hours.
There's also a version split in three for floppies if you prefer
that.

R-1.6.0 is released
I've rolled up R-1.6.0.tgz a short while ago. This is a major upgrade,

A few of the changes generate compatibility issues. You may wish to
consult http://developer.r-project.org/160update.txt.

bundle them up with the main distribution. Thus there is now only a

Why does ZFS report such small directory sizes? For example, take a maildir directory with ten entries:
