problem loading package 'gplots'
...o with no problem on the same machine. The only differences I
can think of since then is that I have upgraded to a newer version of
R as well as upgraded from Mac OS 10.3 to 10.4.
Any suggestions are very welcome. I really want to use barplot2()
with some data I just worked up.

partial autocorrelation for Rt vs. Nt-1, ......., Nt-h
...rtial correlation of population density at time t
against lagged population density.
However, what we are trying to calculate is the partial correlation between
rate of population change, Rt=log Nt/Nt-1, against lagged population
densities. Which is the partial rate correlation function propsed by
Berryman & Turchin (1999).
The list archives give show methods for estimating partial correlation for 2
or 3 variables only. Could any list member please suggest how this could be
done for more variables, say Nt-1 to Nt-10.
Thank you,
Scott

panel.linejoin groups
...te Location Eh
2005-07-14 22:00 A1L 208.1
2005-07-14 22:00 A2L -178.5
Then I can define groups=Location, and it would work. But it would be
good to know if I can make the data work as is - because I have many
many more datasets that are structured this way.
Thank you,
Erin

combination xyplot and barchart?
...cumentation or the help archives, I cannot understand how to:
1) indicate a conditioning variable (Year) for panel.barchart and
panel.xyplot
2) have 2 y axes with different scales in one panel
Is this even possible to do using lattice? Any insight is greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Erin

Filled contour plot showing labeled isolines?
Is it possible to create a contour plot with the isolines labeled. I know
you can do this with Matlab. Argh!
I tried creating a filled contour plot, then using par(new=T), followed by
overlaying the contour plot on top. However, the placement of the filled
contour plot and the contour plot do not align correctly. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

Renaming root account
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi everyone,
One quick question: Is it safe and/or sensible to rename the root
account, so that the only uid 0 user on a system is something different
to root? I can see how this would be effective against external
attackers who have no knowledge of the internals of the system as they
would spend pointless hours trying to crack a user which doesnt
