On the Samba side, I'm not sure what needs to be specified for "realm" and "workgroup". If I set workgroup = zartman.local and realm=ZARTMAN.LOCAL, samba bellyaches and says I can't have workgroup=zartman.local. Alright, I give up. I'm going to go out in the parking lot and scream. Over the years I have built many, many versions of Samba on many versions of BSD[386,OS] and other unixen. I have never, ever had trouble like this (except, of course, with Irix). Never with a BSD. 4.2 ships with Samba 2.0.6 (why? -- 2.0.7 was released last April).
