sequence. As a workaround, I guess I can call set.seed prior to generating
the first sequence. But it puzzles me why capturing the random seed
appears not to be sufficient. Am I overlooking something?
Thanks for any guidance.

X-axis with POSIXct dates
...axis.POSIXct(1, test.dat$man.date, "%m %d, %Y")
creates a tick mark and date label in the desired format, but only at Jan. 1, 2001. In other words, It controls what the label looks like,
but not the number and spacing of labeled tick marks.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

modifying the text size in splom
...#39;d
like to resize the text printed on the diagonals to better display the
names (unless anyone can suggest another approach - creative use of
varnames). I've looked at the code, R-Help, ?splom and the Trellis User's
Guide to no avail.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

company's slow and extremely conservative response to the Nimda worm, I
can't access the web (I now realize how much I use it!). Apologies in

pasting "\" into character strings
Dear R-Help,
I'm using R version 1.6.0 on a Windows computer. I am trying to create
a function that, among other things, constructs strings that refer to
Windows files, e.g., I might want to construct a string like
'c:\work\part1.txt'. I have found that the following does not work.

Combinatorial Optimisation
Hi
I am looking to perform a discrete mean-variance optimisation, specifically to maximise the ratio of portfolio mean over portfolio standard deviation for a portfolio of several hundred stocks through discrete position size holdings in each stock, where all position sizes must be elements of a small finite set of integer amounts which include zero.
I don't think any of the standard R
