Async Query Directory (for VFS)
...S that accesses remote object storage but Spotlight (mds) on MacOS trawls recursively in background resulting in lots of slow directory queries which are being processed synchronously, despite handing preads and pwrites asynchronously. It makes for a not great user experience when the MacOS rainbow beachball shows up and otherwise smooth reads are interrupted. Any pointers appreciated to figure this out. Kind regards, Dan

ZFS, iSCSI + Mac OS X Tiger (globalSAN iSCSI)
...eems to drop fine on the Mac OS X side, even though the Solaris side has shown it gone for a while, however when I reconnect or Log On again, it seems to spin infinitely on the "Target Connect..." dialog. Solaris is, interestingly, showing 1 connection while this apparent issue (spinning beachball of death) is going on with globalSAN. Even killing the Mac OS X process doesn''t seem to get me full control again as I have to restart the system to kill all processes (unless I can hunt them down and `kill -9` them which I''ve not successfully done thus far). Has anyone dealt w...

Installing the Mac RGUI for OS X
Hello, Having installed R 2.3 for OS X Tiger 10.4.6(PPC), i tried running the new R.app, but it hangs (spinning beachball). Moreover, i can't install the RGUI from within the R-2.3 DMG, - it tells me i must have R 10.4 installed ! (I have 10.4.6) R 2.3 runs successfully from the command line however. I tried compiling from sources, but Xcode has this error(i.e it can't locate the R framework, though...

Async directory listing is certainly doable with a few weeks of work for someone really familiar with Samba internals. Another thing you could try would be enabling spotlight on the...

Mac OS X Finder hangs when accessing Samba server
...archives with no joy. Configuration: Server: Fedora FC3, kernel 2.6.9-1.667, samba-3.0.13-1 Client: Mac OS X Panther 10.3.8 The Samba server works fine with a Windows 2000 client on the same LAN. With Panther I am seeing the connection drop during transfers and/or the Finder freezing (spinning beachball of death until a reboot is forced). Here is a snippet from the server log from the time of a connection drop. I was in the process of copying a 9MB file (about 90% done) when the connection dropped. [2005/03/29 22:17:20, 3] smbd/process.c:switch_message(886) switch message SMBecho (pid 12939)...

Convince me to buy TextMate!
I got a Powerbook recently and am debating buying TextMate. I installed the trial and have checked it out, but don''t see what''s so great about it. AFAICS it''s the Ruby and Rails macros for expansion and other stuff that might be it. Other than that, TextMate seems like a pretty basic editor. I currently use PSPad and Editplus, and I could probably get/make macros
