Settings for authentication without an extra password file
Hello, I'm new to dovecot, and, due to having an older version of an OS installed on a test server, I'll be using an older version of dovecot (dovecot-1.0-1.2) to provide IMAP services. On this wiki page (http://wiki.dovecot.org/BasicConfiguration?highlight=%28passwd.dovecot%29) There are instructions for creating a separate dovecot password file: echo "$USER:{PLAIN}password" > passwd.dovecot sudo mv passwd.dovecot /etc So, it appears that two password files will be needed, one for dovecot and one for regular system l...

Problem logging in during testing
Instructions at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/BasicConfiguration say the next thing to test after getting IMAP and Telnet working is to create a dummy user file with the following command: echo "$USER:{PLAIN}password:$UID:$GID::$HOME" > users And place it in /etc/dovecot and protect it appropriately. It was also edited to change the plain-text pas...

Odd Error: Expecting '='
...passdb sql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } userdb sql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } } I don't see how that can be wrong because the dovecot docs mention exactly such a structure and I used the same syntax: http:// wiki.dovecot.org/BasicConfiguration Any clues would be much appreciated, Patrick P.S. My entire config can be found here: http://www.rutski89.com: 31597/upload/dovecot.txt

struggling with dovecot v2.2
Hello all, Long time, no write :-) I am building a spanking, wonderful new mail server. I am very excited about this, since I am going to use the new dovecot v2.2.12 !! However, last time I did this (and documented it), I was working with v1.2. I consulted my notes and it seems there are huge differences between v1.2 and v2.2. So my question is, would anyone know if there's a "quick

Confusion when trying to set up a first postfix+dovecot mailserver
I'm trying to set up a first test for a dovecot + postfix (+ many other things) mail server for about 1000 accounts, and I keep stumbling on confusing inconsistencies in the HowTo documents I'm trying to follow. I tried to do a simple setup with virtual users using a howto saying it was for just that and that it's for Dovecot 2.x, and it shows a few text chunks to put in files,
