Samba/Unicode
Hi all,
I have set up a Linux server to back up the PCs on our LAN. The PCs run
Win2K proand WinXP. I've used Samba version 3.0.10, which comes with Ubuntu
5.04, together with smbmount to mount the Windows shares on the Linux box,
and rsync into the backup directory from there.
The system works smoothly for files with English names, but fails for files
with non-English characters in

Samba 4.8.5 breaks Time Machine support
Hi,
tl;dr - Samba 4.8.5 broke macOS's Time Machine support (at least for
me), patching in the "follow-up patch" from
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13441 makes it work again.
It would be great if it could be included in an official patch release
soon. :)
Just writing about the problem and solution here, in case someone else
stumbles upon it. Couldn't find any

Howto test upgrades?
Hi,
maybe this thread should ask an even more general question:
How are AD-DC admins supposed to test upgrades? If there is more than
one AD-DC, an upgraded DC which causes problems cannot (must not) be
restored from backup. This is one of the reasons why I do not want to
switch to AD. A PDC *can* simply be restored from backup. It is even
enough to switch back to the previous contents of

Incremental backups?
So I thought I'd get a head start for next week -
I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and
limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via
SCSI card.
I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of
the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are
appliances that cannot run any special

I use:

--listed-incremental /home/root/backup/incremental_logfile \

A full backup is done once every week, followed by daily incremental
backups: This is controlled by the tape status. Every Monday we
replace the tapes in the robot. So when no tape is loaded in the
drive this signals that a full backup must be done.
To make a full backup, I simply...
