Problem with permissions
...ttr: rsync: failed to read xattr user.rsync.%stat for "/roach/backup/root/tcb/lib": Permission denied (13) It appears that rsync knows to create remote files with u+rw, but not directories. Is this a bug, or am I missing something? The full command I'm using is: rsync --stats -v -axH --inplace --delete --rsync-path="rsync --fake-super" / user at remote:/backup/root/ I have to put --fake-super in the remote command only, because the system I'm backing up doesn't support extended attributes. -- Chris Adams <cmadams at hiwaay.net> Systems and Network Admi...

Problem with symlinks
...ure that unfortunately has problem with hard links so I stripped down my script to directly run rsync 3.0.4 on the DS: |# Backup source device/share/directory/etc BACKUP_SOURCE=/volume1/thomas/ # Backup destination device/directory BACKUP_TO_DEV=/volumeUSB1/usbshare/thomas_backup/ rsync -q -v -axH --no-inc-recursive --delete --exclude="@eaDir" $BACKUP_SOURCE $BACKUP_TO_DEV| This handles the hard links (-H) but now I have problems with symlinks. When running the script I receive a lot of error messages from this type: rsync: open(backup/sammy-root/2009-07-29/usr/share/pixmaps/cx...

Feature-Request: --write-batch on destination not source

So for my case if would be great if i could instruct the destination rsync, of the A -> B stage, to write the batch-file. *: Currently the bread and butter: rsync -axH --delete -e ssh Bis denn -- Real Programmers consider "what you see is what you get" to be just as bad a concept in Text Editors as it is in women. DO NOT REPLY [Bug 6043] New: rsync ignores -x for some file systems
...in the summary rsync ignores -x for some partitions. megaera froth # mount /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime) /dev/sda5 on /home/froth type crypt (defaults) /dev/sdb1 on /mnt/removable type ext3 (rw) The above listing shows my configured partitions. I use the following command to backup rsync -axH --progress --numeric-ids --delete / /mnt/removable which should backup the content of sda1 to sdb1. What happens is, that is copys from sda1 to sdb1 ignoring (correctly) sda5, but it recursively copys from sdb1 to sdb1 which results in stuff like this mnt/removable/mnt/removable/mnt/removable/mnt...

...core AssignedTo: wayned at samba.org ReportedBy: orion at cora.nwra.com QAContact: rsync-qa at samba.org I am finding that rsync is failing to sync up certain combinations (sender and receiver) of sparse files when using compression. restoring system
I have restored my home directory in the past using rsync but never the entire system. If I rsync / (on my usb drive containing the backup) to / on the computer with a fresh install of the OS, what problems will I run into? What about links? I am presently triple booting 3 linux distros and want to delete one to install something else. The distro I'm installing will be on 3 partitions (/,

script to rysnc to spare hard drive
Im brand new to rsync and i been doing alot of reading about it and it looks like the tool I have long been wanting. Bascially i got 1 server, 2 hard drives. partions are / /boot /home /usr /var /backup (2nd drive) Bascially what i am looking at doing is mirroring the first drive to the 2nd drive, and once that intial one is moved over, have a cron run nightly (or when specified) that will
