Stupid --delete mistake
Hi, I've a nasty feeling I know the answer to this post, but I'm gonna ask
and pray anyway :-)
I just made a rather stupid commandline ordering error and managed to delete
a whole load of data (mostly word files/some pics fwiw) with rsync -delete.
I know, I'm an idiot (and a big one at that). To make matters worse this
was off an ext3 partition, which from what I can find out

Comments about ext3 FS
After a extensive search about a tool or method to undelete/recover
files deleted from a partition whit the ext3 FS, i want to make some
comments about the use of this FS.
What are the benefits of use the ext3 FS in a system (server, desktop,
etc.) if i cant recover files deleted by an intruder if i want need to
make forensics; or if i want to recover important files deleted

ChallengeResponseAuth is not on by default, on Red Hat derived systems.
I'm pretty sure that was already clarified, much earlier in this thread.

Bad crash with Samba 2.2.7 and linux software RAID-5
While running a combination of Samba 2.2.7 and software (md) RAID-5 on a
RedHat 8.0 machine, I have encountered a peculiar behavior. If anyone
can advise, or report a similar happening, I would greatly appreciate it.
If any user logs into the console (GUI login to X) while users are
browsing or accessing files on the Samba share, smbd processes will
begin to enter a "D" state, and

R-beta: POSIX and regcomp on SGI-IRIX 5.3
Hey Guys,
I'm trying to install R on an SGI IRIX 5.3 machine. I'm having trouble
getting R to use POSIX regular expressions. Here is the error message I get
when I run help:

Error in gsub(pattern, replacement, x, ignore.case, extended) : POSIX regular
expressions not available
I looked through the R-help archives and I found a few tips concerning the

Strange POP3 problem...
I've been having this problem for a long time now. It started when I first
began to use Dovecot (0.9x) and seems to have been occurring more and more
frequently as we've progressed through the betas and now into RC7. I have
been kind of chaulking it up to a "user issue" since the problem only seems
to occur for one user (who has one machine at his office, and one at his

Asterisk 1.07 crash under Debian Sarge
I have just finished implementing an Asterisk system for my place of
business (first one), and after three days of flawless usage, Asterisk
seems to have crashed. I wasn't running with '-g', so I don't have a
core dump. Here's the sequence of events leading up to the crash:
1. call comes in on our TDM2400P
2. all of our phones (about 26 Polycoms) ring. (it's after

Best Practices for Data Recovery for corrupted EXT2/3?
Hey all..
I had a bad IDE controller that hosed my EXT3 filesystems. A resulting fsck
damaged pat of the filesystem and the root inode is gone (on my main drive
AND the backup drive). I immediately DD'd the main drive over to an
identical drive that I have been working on. But every time.. a fsck
destroys all the data (moves everything to lost+found) and nothing that I've

Fedora change that will probably affect RHEL
...use that logic with, password based auth by default, rather
than PKA by default.
A rather strong argument can be made, much more so than a very weak >
weak password quality policy, for sshd on a default 7 day disable
timer. That is, by default, after 7 days, sshd is stopped and
disabled. In the autopsies of pwned computers is the quickly
provisioned server with a standard simple in-house password for such
things, with the idea that after configuration the password will get
changed or more likely sshd is disabled or it'll be added to firewall
filtering. The reality is all the bad practices hap...

False. OS X by default runs only signed binaries, and if they come
from the App Store they run in a sandbox. User gains significant
security with this, and are completely unaware of it. There is no
inconvenience.
