R doesn't compile on FreeBSD 10.2
First, this there is no evidence here of a 'compilation' failure: it
seems to be about installation, and more specifically about loading
dynamic libs.
Second, we don't have all the pertinent information such as the
configure options used and the architecture (x86_64?). I am going to
have to guess none as none were mentioned, but using --enable-R-shlib
would be pertinent.

extremely slow syncing on btrfs with 2.6.39.1
....00
I''ll switch to 3.0 soon, but, given the fact that we''re going to be
running MeeGo on 2.6.39 probably for a while, I was wondering if
anyone knows off the top of their heads if this issue is
known/identified. If not then I''ll need to make someone do some
patching ;).

Time Series Data
...all and thanks in advance.
I am regressing Time and Weight, and then predicting Weight at
different Time. The format of the Time data is day/month/year. How
can I get R to use time series data such as this?

Newbie question about by() -- update
Sorry about the lack of detail. I am running R v.1.2.2. I can recast my
question
(which I think I have partially answered) more succinctly as follows:
1. This seems to work (note that group takes values 1,2,3,4, or 5):
my.newfun <- function(x) myfile <- lm(award ~ ilogemp + ilogage, x)
test.by <- by(wintemp, as.factor(wintemp$group), my.newfun)
2. This does not work (leaving aside

New version of X11, png and jpeg
R-devel has new versions of the X11(), png() and jpeg() devices on
Unix-alikes. The intention is that these are used identically to the
previous versions (which remain available) but will produce higher-quality
output with more features.
Pros:
Antialiasing of text and lines (can be turned off) but no blurring of
fills.
Buffering of the X11 display and fast repainting from a backing image.

subdirs in package src dir
Sometimes I find it useful to put C or Fortran sources under subdirs of
"mypackage/src", especially to distinguish between my own files and
e.g. lapack or blas sources. To get this working I would need a Makefile
in my package which contains the appropriate dependencies to these sources
in subdirs.
But I don't want to add a complete Makefile, I want only a Makevars file

R doesn't compile on FreeBSD 10.2
The datetime.R issue looks familiar. Darwin (the basis for OS X) copied
a lot of things from FreeBSD, bugs and all. So I expect the same remedy
applies (http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/r-patched/R-admin.html#OS-X):
'Configure option --with-internal-tzcode is the default on OS X, as the
system implementation of time zones does not work correctly for times
before 1902 or after 2037
