When encoded with oggenc -b 128, there is a sort of stereo separation
in the drums, while in the original they are 'solidly' positioned in the
stereo field. This also occurs with -b 160 and is barely audible with
-b 192.

In this one there is a breathy vocal that becomes noisy and has the same
stereo effect as above. This is audible with -b 128 through -b 256.
In each of these, the part of the sound in which the artifact is audible
is a panned mono sound mix...

Weird phone behavior after recent CentOS 5 update
For some reason our Asterisk box is doing something really unusual following applying a routine update to CentOS 5 on Monday.
We have Asterisk 1.4.2 and its been working great for years. But now when the phone system receives an incoming SIP call, its not providing any audible dial sound to any caller. It is recognizing the incoming call, and after no answer for about 5 rings or so, it goes to voice mail. But there is no audible 'ring' to the caller. Just nothing - blank, empty silence.
Of course any automated answering system (ie. business phone menu, etc.)...

I experience the "same" low level noise even in a wav file,
even on frequencies a bit higher, when playing on shitty enough speakers.
I don't think it is a relict of the com...

Capturing audio streams with Linux?
So I got a new Pocket PC this weekend (yes, you read that right, sorry,
don't like the Palms on offer currently and I can at least install
software on it via Windows on VMWare). One of the main things I wanted
to do with it is get Audible.com again and listen to All Things
Considered from NPR on the way home like I used to. Now I find out they
not only don't have an agreement with Audible any longer where I can pay
them for this service, but now they are podcasting, but not the whole
show. *sigh*
So what to do.... My thinking i...

Speech detection in preprocessor with echo

cancellator), the music is removed but the result is still detected as
speech even if almost silence remains in the signal.
Also, the AGC keeps adjusting to the minute remains in the signal, meaning
that sooner or later it will amplify the remains enough that it's clearly
audible on the other side. If I cough or say a word, the AGC readjusts and
all is fine.
Looking at the members of the speex_preprocess structure, I see that
during these long periods of "silence" (only the background music or
only the other end talking while I shut up):

Very audible artifact in RC3
Are you aware that RC3 can cause a scratching, repeating noise to the audio? I
downloaded an album in ogg format and while all other track seem ok, the last
one has this problem. Sounds too weird to be a ripping problem and ogginfo
(1.0) doesn't see any problem with the stream. If you'd like to listen to the
file and have a BIG mailbox (size=3677710) or a login to some webspace,

New asterisk installation but no audible voicemail prompts?
Hi List!
I installed Asterisk 1.0.3 stable on a RHEL rebuild. Due to problems with
* modules refusing to build I replaced the RHEL kernel with stock 2.6.10.
Asterisk seems to be working but when I dial voicemail I hear nothing.
When I hangup I see a message on the console that the calller did not
specify a mailbox number so I guess voicemail app is working.
The phone(Grandstream BT100) is

when dialling. So disconnected numbers are never detected as
disconnected numbers.
We tried this with digium and sangoma cards and the results are the same.
Quest offered us a audible treatment of the line which made things even
worse and would block the B-Channel for playing the message without
asterisk being aware that the channel is still used.
Otherwise we have a huge problem with congestion due to unavailable B-
Channels when the number of connections in asterisk does not...

Playback 5% Too Fast?
Hi All
I have a problem with IVR scripts which consist mainly of Playback of
audio files, driven from an AGI application. There are clicks every few
seconds or more frequently that is audible on the remote end (PSTN), but
not on the Asterisk recording of the call. If I record the remote end
and compare it to the local recording, it appears to be about 5%-7% too
fast - i.e. if I synchronise the starts, the remote end finishes sooner.
I can find points in the remote recording where parts...

Can compressed music sound better than uncompressed?
...ck system itself. Live
music does not pass through amplifiers and loudspeakers, it goes directly to
the ear. But recorded music must pass through the playback signal chain. Much
of the original signal present in a live recording merely degrades the
playback system's ability to reproduce the audible signal. Because a
perceptual coder removes inaudible signal content, the playback system's
ability to convey audible music logically should improve. In short, a
perceptual coder more properly codes an audio signal for passage through an
audio system."
Is this bullshit or an interestin...

Pre-echo like noises on Beta4
Hi, there.
Although I'm not a hacker at all, I noticed an audible noise on Beta
4 encoded files. So, I'd like to report it here.
I ripped and encoded 'A Day Without Rain' on the album with the same
name By Enya into Vorbis using Oggenc and Oggdrop Beta 4 from the Vorbis
site. (You know, she is quite an encoder-killer.) At all the bitrates,
files e...

always, too quiet. I've determined that it depends heavily on where that
remote party is.
- If the remote party is on a circuit on the same local exchange, the
volume is perfect or nearly perfect.
- If the party is on a remote exchange, the volume can vary, from barely
audible, to audible but still too quiet to be really comfortable. In
these cases, the users will crank the handset or headset volume on their
Polycoms to make the remote party audible, but that ends up causing
distortion which is bad enough to be irritating. The volume level does
seem to depend on the exch...

AEC learning behaviour
...speex echo canceller into PulseAudio, and coupled
with the AGC/denoiser, it works reasonably well and has been a breeze to
plug in, so thank you!
One thing we're seeing, though, is that the canceller seems to take some
time (a few seconds) to "learn", so initially the echo is clearly
audible and it slowly fades out. This sometimes occurs in the middle of
a call as well (the echo becomes loud again and fades away in a few
seconds).
With the echo suppressor enabled, the learning time seems to drop, but
the final echo remains higher than without suppression, and is still
sufficiently aud...

Few questions concerning clipping
I noticed that clipping occurs in lossy audio compression even
if there is no clipping in the original file (though the original
file has peaks that are just below the maximum). I know
that this happens due to all the filtering involved during compression,
but I'm wondering just how audible this clipping is because I don't
hear anything wrong. I mean, as things are now, is it safe to say
that the clipping introduced in Vorbis will not be audible if,
of course, the input file doesn't have clipped parts? Is it
possible to avoid clipping at all (if the source isn't clipped)?...
