question on RAID performance
Hi all, I was wonder what experiences there are out there with using RAID-X for performance increases. I do use RAID-1 (2 disks) but am interested in attemtps to gain higher R/W performance. Do the RAID-5's etc give noticeable performace increases? A significant help for me was using ccache for compiling programs. That was a real performance increase. Thanks for any suggestions/opinions. jerry

ldap and computer accounts
I'm attemtping to configure a Ubuntu server for a bunch of windows clients. I'd like the authentication information to be in ldap.So far the stuff works, I can authenticate users in LDAP just fine. But when I want a windows machine to join the domain I get the error 'The user name could not be found'. The computer account gets created (via smbldap-tools) and I can see it in the

1.0.rc10 status report
...l occurences of "User unknown" (from "deliver") giving "dsn=5..." for perfectly valid users. So for this rc10 test I applied a local patch so these were reduced to "EX_TEMPFAIL" (dsn=4...). (This was triggered, as epected, a few times and subsequent delivery attemtps succeeded.) I strongly suspect that this is some sort of issue with FC5, probably "nscd" and nothing to do with dovecot. Hints would be nice, but from the dovecot perspective you may probably ignore this item. 2. For one particular user, the "deliver" consistently gave:...

asterisk at home, broadvoice and iptables
I can't seem to register properly with broadvoice servers. Looking at tcpdump and log files I see registrations attemtps and traffic to broadvoice, but no traffic or error messages of any kind from broadvoice. Do my rules look ok ? SOLVED Re: ldap and computer accounts
The solution is quite simple: You need to configure pam-nss for samba to work. Essentially samba is using a 'getent' call to look up computers independent is configured as passdb backend. That means the pam-nss must be configured for samba to find the computer entries in ldap. I find this very much counter-intuitive ! Thanks to Tom Crummey <tom@ee.ucl.ac.uk> and John Drescher

[Bug 26108] New: xrandr rotate causes a segfault with HWCursor set to false
...ewfrank at gmail.com QAContact: xorg-team at lists.x.org Created an attachment (id=32706) --> (http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=32706) Xorg.0.log after attempted rotate and crash. OVERVIEW On my dual-monitor setup, if HWCursor is set to false in the xorg.conf file then attemtps to rotate one or both screens with xrandr result in segfaults. STEPS TO REPRODUCE Add "Option" "HWCursor" "false" to xorg.conf and restart X. Then, attempt to rotate a screen using xrandr --output VGA-1 --rotate left ACTUAL RESULTS X segfaults. Authenticating from Windows domains via winbind the easy way
Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement, but in the past 6 weeks or so there have probably been close on 100 questions on getting Winbind working. For those of you who are new to linux/samba, you may want to consider using Mandrake 9.0 for your first implementation, since *everything* (ok, there is one bug which I will mention) is taken care of for you. When installed in expert mode, you

Assigning empty symbol to variable.
When a variable is assigned the empty symbol, looking up the variable results in an error message that looks like a function call: > foo <- as.list(lm)$data > ls() [1] "foo" > foo Error: argument "foo" is missing, with no default > get("foo") Error in get("foo") : argument "foo" is missing, with no default > rm("foo")

Interesting interaction between journal recovery and slow boots
...the startup scripts use a package called initlog to capture all of the console output (including the above) and "syslog" it (to /var/log/boot.log on Red Hat 7.0 systems). Well, the copious amounts of JFS records were flooding the syslog server and causing it to back up, blocking further attemtps to write to syslog while the back up was being flushed to disk. Every startup script uses initlog to write the output of the startup to syslog, so the scripts immediatley following the start of the syslogger were blocking, presumably due to syslogd's buffer being full. b.

Update on spam, postfix, fail2ban, centos 6
...ocess. More interesting that no matter how strict or lax I make the system there will be the same number of attempted mails sent to my server. (give or take a few hundred). If I unban all the ips, which I did once, there was a one day bump up, then it leveled off to the same amount of individual attemtps (not counting the same attempt being tried again). I have 35,000 ips blocked right now and nothing changed...except yahoo spam. Spamassassin I use, but only for level 10 or more spam...it is deleted. I found all of these over the last few months to be the kind with attachments, probably viruses....

3.0.7 net join to NT4 domain - silently fails?
I've got no responce to my mail with subject 'samba 3.0.7 cannot join NT4 domain', so I dug deeper. I also read carefully these docs: swat/help/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/domain-member.html swat/help/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/winbind.html This is what I observe: 1.I srtart from clean state: PDC has no HUNTER machine account (chkd with L0phtcrack) HUNTER has empty var/{lock,private} samba

Recovery of RAIDZ with broken label(s)
...the HP controller built a mirrored volume using the two drives (and I think started the actual mirroring process). (Hence on at least on of the drives - a copied labels 0,1). 5) From there everything went downhill. This happened a while back, and so the exact order of things (including my botched attemtps at recovery) are hazy. I tried using Jeff Bonwick''s labelfix binary to create new labels but it carps because the txg is not zero. The situation now is I have dd''d the drives onto a NAS. These images are shared via NFS to a VM running Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 X86. When I attemp...

Problems when using latest git tree to boot xen on OMAP5
Hi Julien, Since Ian has merged most my OMAP5 patches, I decide to try to update my working tree to it today. However, it seems it doesn't work as expected. There mainly two kind of problems that I met: 1. It seems that xen no longer maps some of io memory regions described in dts. For example, the memory regions in "ocp" node of omap5.dtsi. 2. commit c88d32f4 seems to be conflict

...an asychronous connect on a newly created one will be started. Assuming the lifetime of the query isn't yet over, it will either be started again on another available connection or pushed back onto the front of the query queue, causing it to be started as soon as a connection becomes available. Attemtps to reestablish the failed connection will continue (with 5 seconds of delay between each) in the background until success.
