question on RAID performance
Hi all, I was wonder what experiences there are out there with using RAID-X for performance increases. I do use RAID-1 (2 disks) but am interested in attemtps to gain higher R/W performance. Do the RAID-5's etc give noticeable performace increases? A significant help for me was using ccache for compiling programs. That was a real performance increase. Thanks for any suggestions/opinions.

1.0.rc10 status report
(Background: Relatively new to dovecot; looking to do transparent replacement of long-established UW-IMAP on cluster of Linux boxes which NFS-mount a shared "/var/spool/mail".) With rc8, where I had already increased "login_max_processes_count" from default 128 to 1024, we had still hit the issue of too many logins crashing dovecot, so that trial had only lasted a couple of

I can't seem to register properly with broadvoice servers. Looking at tcpdump and log files I see registrations attemtps and traffic to broadvoice, but no traffic or error messages of any kind from broadvoice. Do my rules look ok ? ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere ACCEPT icmp -- anywhere anywhere

SOLVED Re: ldap and computer accounts
...computer entries in ldap. I find this very much counter-intuitive ! Thanks to Tom Crummey <tom@ee.ucl.ac.uk> and John Drescher <drescherjm@gmail.com> for pointing me into the right direction. Authenticating from Windows domains via winbind the easy way
.... Unfortunately I have not thoroughly tested joining of 9.1 to a domain, and have yet to have someone confirm that it works, but if it does not work, all that is required is a join of the domain post-install. So, if you don't want to battle through a week of understanding all the issues in attemtping to get winbind running, you may want to consider trying Mandrake 9.0. I demonstrated this at a local conference, and in the allotted 30 minutes could do a (minimal with KDE) installation, joining the machine during installation, log into KDE and console with a domain account on first boot with...

Assigning empty symbol to variable.
When a variable is assigned the empty symbol, looking up the variable results in an error message that looks like a function call: > foo <- as.list(lm)$data > ls() [1] "foo" > foo Error: argument "foo" is missing, with no default > get("foo") Error in get("foo") : argument "foo" is missing, with no default > rm("foo")

Interesting interaction between journal recovery and slow boots
For some time now I have been puzzled as to why certain portions of my system boot were quite slow -- but only after journal recoveries. I was fearing that there was some ugly interaction between the recovery and the use of the journal shortly afterward but alas that is not the case. So just in case anybody else is seeing this problem and decides to try to hunt it down, let me save you some

Update on spam, postfix, fail2ban, centos 6
I have been using centos 6 in a virtualized system for a few months now. Took a while to batten down the hatches with postfix, rbls, and to use fail2ban correctly. The mailserver for my website(s) are located on the http server as well..an 'all in one' server. DNS servers are separated. My two sites, and their emails addresses (1 for each) have been around for 10 and 15 years

3.0.7 net join to NT4 domain - silently fails?
I've got no responce to my mail with subject 'samba 3.0.7 cannot join NT4 domain', so I dug deeper. I also read carefully these docs: swat/help/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/domain-member.html swat/help/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/winbind.html This is what I observe: 1.I srtart from clean state: PDC has no HUNTER machine account (chkd with L0phtcrack) HUNTER has empty var/{lock,private} samba

Recovery of RAIDZ with broken label(s)
Hi all, I have a 5 drive RAIDZ volume with data that I''d like to recover. The long story runs roughly: 1) The volume was running fine under FreeBSD on motherboard SATA controllers. 2) Two drives were moved to a HP P411 SAS/SATA controller 3) I *think* the HP controllers wrote some volume information to the end of each disk (hence no more ZFS labels 2,3) 4) In its "auto

Problems when using latest git tree to boot xen on OMAP5
Hi Julien, Since Ian has merged most my OMAP5 patches, I decide to try to update my working tree to it today. However, it seems it doesn't work as expected. There mainly two kind of problems that I met: 1. It seems that xen no longer maps some of io memory regions described in dts. For example, the memory regions in "ocp" node of omap5.dtsi. 2. commit c88d32f4 seems to be conflict

PostgreSQL driver supporting [round-robin] load balancing and redundancy [LONG]
One of the things my employer uses dovecot for is as mail download server for an 'e-mail purification service' (AV/ anti-spam) for smartphones. The service itself presently runs on a rented server somewhere in the UK and the corresponding 'web service' front-end and user account/ mail account database resides on a server in Germany. The UK dovecot server uses the PostgreSQL server
