gmirror and gstripe
hail, I have an old AthlonXP 1700+ running 7-STABLE: FreeBSD xxx 7.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE #1: Thu Nov 13 23:54:59 BRT 2008 root@xxx:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/xxx i386 where I have two 750GB Seagate SATA Disks. They are divided as two slices, around the first 120GB are gathered in gmirror, and what left is in gstripe....

How accurate is show translation?
Hi all, I'm using 'show translation' to help dimension my system, but I confused by the results I get. My 2 test systems (results below): an AthlonXP 2000+ (1.3GHz) and a Pentium D930 (duo-core, 3.0GHz) produced similar results (D930 is slightly faster). Googling shows that others have similar results running on other CPU speeds >2.0GHz. At first glance, it would look like the AthlonXP gives better bang for the buck :). But, I'm sure...

R on Windows Hangs on Packages Built from Sources
...hese packages; but I just had the same problem with a simple example R package that I wrote. I was able to build and load the package on a Linux system at school so I figure I've, hopefully, ruled out a programming problem on my part. The system I'm having the problem on is as follows: AMD AthlonXP R 1.9.0 installed from binaries GCC 3.3.1 Thanks, James

[LLVMdev] benchmarking LLVM
Hi all i took a look into LLVM benchmarks from nightly tester and ran Shootout tests on my own. Below go just few outlines. 1. results on my AMD AthlonXP and Xeon used by LLVM team are different sometime. In particular, both Shootout and Shootout-C++ show great speed up with LLVM (in comparison to GCC) on ackerman test on my AthlonXP. But here: http://llvm.cs.uiuc.edu/testresults/X86/ GCC is reported to be quicker on Benchmarks/Shootout...

GUI bug (PR#1711)
Full_Name: Socrates Alikhanidi Version: 1.5.1 OS: Windows 2000 Submission from: (NULL) (133.15.3.28) During resizing of 'R Console' windows the fatal error of forbidden memory access appears. To reproduce that with a guaranty, resize windows by mouse with small steps. Probably the faster computer is, the earlier that event appears. I have PIV 1.8 GHz. Waiting time was near 1 second.

R Installation Manual - ATLAS BLAS guidance that is not in the current version
...ion (2.10 I believe) has the following text: Optionally, you can install a version of ATLAS (`math-atlas.sourceforge.net' (http://math-atlas.sourceforge.net/)) tuned to your system for fast linear algebra routines. Pre-built `Rblas.dll' for various Pentium and AthlonXP chips are available in the `windows/contrib/ATLAS' area on CRAN. If you are building R from source, there are macros `USE_ATLAS' and `ATLAS_PATH' in the file `MkRules'. Set `USE_ATLAS = YES' and `ATLAS_PATH' to where the ATLAS libraries are located....

Tuned Rblas.dll available on CRAN (for Windows)
...ne of these, just rename rw1051\bin\Rblas.dll and drop the replacment in its place. Using a tuned BLAS will be noticeably faster only on some linear-algebra calculations, notably those using La.svd and La.eigen (which might be twice as fast). There are versions there for Pentium II and 4, and for AthlonXP. A version for Pentium III will be available later this week. (If you have a high-performance system, in particular one with dual processors or some sort of Xeon, you ought to build ATLAS and Rblas.dll on the target system.) In theory at least the same Rblas.dll will work with rw1050, rw1051 and...

Lots of overhead with ZFS - what am I doing wrong?
...two Seagate 7200.10 320G drives hanging off the same interface card). On the test machine I also have an old disk with UFS on PATA interface (Seagate 7200.7 120G). dd from raw disk gives 58MB/s and dd from file on UFS gives 45MB/s - far less relative slowdown compared to raw disk. This is just an AthlonXP 2500+ with 32bit PCI SATA sil3114 card, but nonetheless, the hardware has the bandwidth to fully saturate the hard drive, as seen by dd from the raw disk device. What is going on? Am I doing something wrong or is ZFS just not designed to be used on humble hardware? My goal is to have it go fast en...

New version of benchmark comparing R with other software
Hello, Thanks to Douglas Bates, there is now a new benchmark suite (version 2.3) which is compatible with R 1.9.0 and the recent Matrix library (0.8-1 or above). You find it at http://www.sciviews.org/other/benchmark.htm. It compares R 1.9.0 under Windows with: S-PLUS 6.5, Matlab 6.0, O-Matrix 5.6, Octave 2.1.42, Scilab 2.7 and Ox 3.30. In short, R in its version 1.9.0 and with the new Matrix

I have googled for similar problems with other USB based UPS units. My rig is a nForce2 based AthlonXP running Gentoo w/ kernel 2.6.14. dmesg shows nothing unusual. The output is after unpluging the USB cable to get udev to add the new /dev/ups entry and trying to load the ups driver. The unit's USB is working as Bulldog works fine under windows. --- #dmesg cdrom: open failed. usb 3-1.4: USB di...

Matrix efficiency in 1.9.0 vs 1.8.1
...s and lots of conversions between Matrix and matrix. Am I missing a trick here somewhere, that would let me use only Matrix objects and do with them the things one can do with matrix objects? Or some other way to avoid the twofold speed hit in moving to 1.9? I've tried using the Rblas.dll for AthlonXP on CRAN, and it doesn't help. Thanks in advance, Steve Stephen P. RAID affecting X100P performance...
I have a P3-800 with two IDE drives in a software RAID1 configuration. Each drive is on a separate IDE channel. Now anytime there is HD activity, I hear "beeps" and "cutting out" on a call using the X100P card. I ran the zttest program, and discovered HD activity would drop the accuracy down to between 2% and 50%. However I noticed if I disabled one drive in the RAID1
