POSIX primer
I have not used POSIX classes previously and now have a need to use them. I have sports data with times of some athletes after different events. I need to perform some simple analyses using the times. I think I've figured out how to do this. I just want to confirm with others who have more experience that this is indeed the correct approach. If not, please suggest a more appropriate way.
Suppose I have times f...

Mail server troubles
...ldren, I've observed that schools seem to
have a vastly over-inflated view of the importance of their
communications. I've provided my email address to my children's schools
as an EMERGENCY contact method, and I've been receiving notifications of
every single fund raising activity, athletic event, PTA meeting, etc.,
etc., ever since - despite multiple complaints.
It seems likely to me that the school's emails are being reported as
spam by their recipients. Tell them to look in the mirror.

Serial Woes
I have been trying to throw away my dependence on Windoz since the early
Pentium era, but there always seems to be some essential application
that can't be replaced. Currently it is the programs that read my blood
glucose meeter and an athletic trainer system. Both of them communicate
through a serial port. I am currently working on getting the trainer
going. It loads fine and has no trouble running until it tries to
connect to the hardware. I get a program error saying that it cannot
find the trainer. I seem to have the link that p...

has_many, :finder_sql, setting attributes
...is somewhat complicated, but bear with me. My project has a
number of models: User, Program, and Team. Users belong to multiple
Programs. Programs have multiple teams, but Teams belong to one
program. For each Program a User belongs to, he can belong to multiple
Teams. (Think of this in an athletic context where users are athletes,
programs are universities). So my models look something like this:
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :user_programs
has_many :programs, :through => :user_programs
has_many :user_teams, :finder_sql => ''SELECT ut.* FROM user_teams...

Appropriate measure of correlation with 'zero-inflated' data?
...y plays 10-15 games per season, so not every team will play
every other team. The game is so rough that it is not feasible to
play more than one match per week and a national playoff after the
regular season is impractical. It would take too long and the players
are, in theory, students first and athletes second.
In place of a national playoff there are various polls of coaches or
sports writers that purport to rank teams nationally. Several
analysts also publish computer-based rankings that use complicated
formulas based on scores in individual games, strength of the
opponent, etc. to rank team...

Mail server troubles
Hi,
This is probably a bit OT, but here goes.
I've been running our local school's mail server since 2013, with mail
addresses for school staff and some teachers. The server is running CentOS 7
with Postfix and Dovecot, and it's a nice no-bullshit configuration with SPF,
DKIM and DMARC.
The school sends quite a lot of email out to parents, and sometimes, mail gets
rejected:

Stop words in queries
I''ve run in to an issue that I''m not sure how to address. Basically, I''m
building queries with occur_default Search::BooleanClause::Occur::MUST,
and using the StandardAnalyzer which does stop filtering. The stop
filtering is working beautifully on the indexing side. The problem is
that when the query parser parses through a query with a stop word in
it, say

Are you looking for something that will give you
serious rewards for your effort?
If you answered yes to these questions read on.
If you are among the few that see the possibilies
this can change your life.
It is changing mine. I have been very successful as
an athlete and coach. I have helped my students
become World and National Champions. But making
money has never been a strength of mine.
That has now changed. I am on my way to making a
residual income of $100,000 a year.
Part of the reason I love this is that I get the chance

LLVM map to specific data model?
I'm currently working on a query engine based on LLVM and looking for
the "best" approach to map our own generic "data model" within the
infrastructure.
When I do a query, lets say I have athletes and wish to apply a query
like this :
age > 18 && result.speed > 15
Here is my data model, it is generic data model and a data schema that
describe the 'form' of the data. Here are some pseudo-code :
